Summary of Job Duties:
The Specialist will provide administrative program support to the TRIO program by providing professional academic guidance and tutoring in two areas: social science, which includes psychology, history, criminal justice, Personal Social Development, Career Life Planning, and Art and Music Appreciation; and business management, which includes accounting, business administration, finance, economics, and marketing courses.
The specialist will provide one-on-one academic coaching, group tutoring, and educational support and services to students enrolled in the program. Additional responsibilities include updating and maintaining electronic and paper files for program participants; tracking student progress; developing and implementing retention strategies; identifying and recruiting potential program participants; maintaining a student caseload; and assisting with planning and facilitating student workshops, orientations, and events.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in education, social work, general studies, business, or a related field from an accredited institution. Two years of professional experience in areas related to youth programs, underrepresented populations, non-profit or educational work, or similar fields.
Strong program development/planning skills. Ability to manage confidential information. Ability to effectively communicate and maintain effective working relationships with participants, program staff, and campus partners.
Assist with SSS student recruitment for this component. Engage in a variety of student outreach efforts through verbal and written communications. Maintain a caseload of students. Make weekly contact with assigned students. Provide academic tutoring, coaching, and mentoring, in addition to post-secondary guidance. Conduct student documentation of services. Create and maintain electronic and paper files of student activity. Enter student data in software database. Coordinate student learning workshops. Supervise graduate school visits and assist with travel agenda. Collaborate with department instructors in the appropriate departments for syllabi development for this component. Participate in program and departmental meetings, planning sessions, and trainings.
Demonstrate experience, understanding, and commitment to first-generation students and/or students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education. Evidence of skills and ability to utilize technology. Experience working with low-income, first-generation, or disabled youth. Experience working with TRIO and youth programs, specifically college students. Knowledge of post-secondary admissions, scholarship, and financial aid processes. Experience with recruitment and facilitation.
