What is a tribe leader?

Tribe Leaders are individuals responsible for guiding and managing a group (or 'tribe') within an organization, often in agile or product development environments. Their main role is to align multiple squads or teams toward common goals, facilitate collaboration, and remove obstacles to ensure effective delivery. Tribe Leaders also focus on fostering a positive culture, supporting the professional growth of team members, and ensuring that the tribe's objectives align with the broader organizational strategy.

How does a tribe leader typically facilitate collaboration and alignment among multiple cross-functional squads within their tribe?

A Tribe Leader plays a crucial role in ensuring that various squads within their tribe are aligned with the overall business objectives and collaborate effectively. This is typically achieved by organizing regular tribe-wide meetings, fostering open communication channels, and acting as a bridge between squads and upper management. Tribe Leaders also help resolve dependencies and remove roadblocks by coordinating with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and other stakeholders. Their focus on alignment enables squads to work autonomously while still contributing toward shared goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tribe leader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tribe Leader, you need strong leadership abilities, strategic planning skills, and experience in managing cross-functional teams, often with a background in agile methodologies. Familiarity with agile frameworks like Scrum or SAFe, and tools such as Jira or Confluence, is typically required. Exceptional communication, motivational skills, and conflict resolution abilities help foster collaboration and drive team performance. These skills are crucial for aligning teams with organizational goals and ensuring successful delivery of projects in dynamic environments.

Job description

Job Summary

Sun Tribe EPC ("Sun Tribe") is Virginiaโ€™s premier utilityโ€‘scale solar design and build firm, specializing in subโ€‘20MW groundโ€‘mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities. Our construction efforts are focused throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland, and neighboring states. At Sun Tribe, we build with purposeโ€”prioritizing safety, quality, and environmental stewardship in every project we deliver.

The Electrical Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the electrical and mechanical installation, quality assurance, and commissioning activities for assigned solar construction projects. As a key member of the Field Operations team, this role provides technical leadership throughout construction by supporting planning, subcontractor coordination, quality inspections, commissioning, troubleshooting, and project closeout activities. The Electrical Superintendent works closely with Construction Management to ensure electrical and mechanical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, applicable codes, quality standards, and Sun Tribe's core values.

This position reports directly to the Senior Quality & Commissioning Manager and works closely with Construction Management, Project Management, Project Engineering, EHS, clients, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to support successful project delivery.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Oversees electrical and mechanical construction activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, applicable codes, quality standards, and Sun Tribe requirements.
  • Provides technical leadership throughout construction by supporting planning, field execution, quality assurance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and project closeout activities.
  • Maintains field presence during critical phases of construction, testing, commissioning, and energization to support successful project execution.
  • Performs field observations and quality inspections, identifies technical risks, and supports timely resolution of electrical and mechanical construction issues.
  • Coordinates electrical and mechanical construction activities with Construction Management and project teams to support safe, efficient, and highโ€‘quality project execution.
  • Reviews electrical and mechanical material submittals, technical documentation, and subcontractor work to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Oversees electrical testing, startup, commissioning, utility witness testing, and equipment energization activities.
  • Develops and manages electrical and mechanical quality plans, punch lists, commissioning documentation, and related project records.
  • Supports preconstruction activities including drawing reviews, technical site visits, subcontractor evaluations, commissioning planning, and development of electrical construction standards.
  • Collaborates closely with Construction Management, Project Management, Engineering, Quality, EHS, subcontractors, and clients to support successful project delivery.
  • Contributes to continuous improvement efforts by supporting development of electrical construction standards, commissioning processes, quality documentation, and field best practices.
Basic Qualifications Required
  • Education Required: High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Journeyman Electrician license required; Master Electrician license preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of utilityโ€‘scale solar construction experience required.
  • Experience commissioning frontโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘meter and behindโ€‘theโ€‘meter solar projects.
  • Current, valid driver's license and eligibility for corporate vehicle insurance coverage.
Skills & Experience Preferred
  • Experience with thermography, electrical testing, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and energization of utilityโ€‘scale solar facilities.
  • Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), ANSI/NETA ATS, IEC 62446, and other applicable electrical standards.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical, mechanical, and protection relay drawings.
