Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by forestry departments, environmental organizations, and landscaping companiesProfessional role in landscaping, municipal services, and tree care companies

Tree Internships provide hands-on experience in tree care and forestry, often as entry-level positions or training opportunities. Arborists are certified professionals specializing in diagnosing and maintaining trees. While internships focus on learning and gaining experience, arborists perform advanced tree care tasks. Both roles are essential in the tree care industry, but internships are typically temporary and educational, whereas arborists are full-time specialists.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a tree internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in a tree internship, you need a basic knowledge of arboriculture, plant biology, and environmental science, often supported by relevant coursework or training. Familiarity with field equipment such as chainsaws, pruning tools, and GIS mapping systems is typically required. Strong observational skills, teamwork, and a commitment to safety make candidates stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for effectively supporting tree care operations, ensuring safety, and contributing to environmental stewardship.

What are tree internships?

Tree internships are educational and hands-on training opportunities for individuals interested in arboriculture, forestry, environmental science, or related fields. These internships typically involve working with trees in urban or natural environments, assisting with tree planting, maintenance, research, and conservation projects. Interns gain practical experience and knowledge about tree care, ecosystem management, and sustainability practices, often working alongside professionals such as arborists or forest managers.

What kinds of hands-on experiences can I expect during a Tree Internship, and how do these prepare me for a career in arboriculture or forestry?

During a Tree Internship, you can expect to participate in a variety of fieldwork activities such as tree planting, pruning, disease identification, and data collection on tree health. You'll often work outdoors alongside experienced arborists, learning proper use of tools and safety protocols. These experiences provide valuable practical skills, a deeper understanding of urban forestry or conservation practices, and networking opportunities within the field. This groundwork is essential for pursuing advanced roles in arboriculture, forestry management, or environmental science after your internship.

Job description

Yellowstone Landscape is dedicated to excellence in commercial landscaping. As the largest privately-owned commercial landscaping company in the nation, we offer exciting career opportunities for Landscape Professionals across the United States. To learn more, please visit our website: www.yellowstonelandscape.com.

Our growing company is seeking college students and recent college grads to join our Internship Program. The Yellowstone Landscape Internship Program provides students with an array of experiences in the landscape industry including management, construction, tree care, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, plant identification and crew management. We can accommodate interns at most branch locations. This is a full-time, paid position.

Responsibilities

We've designed this program with you in mind. You'll be exposed to different aspects of the landscape industry. A rotating schedule and learning objectives are clearly defined before you begin, allowing the Branch Manager, Intern Mentor and you to develop a program that best suits your interests and the needs of the branch.

You will be paired with an Account Manager (Mentor) who will act as your primary supervisor and be someone you can go to with questions or concerns. Your Mentor will share their management philosophy and help you develop your own management style. They'll always be there to provide feedback throughout the program.

Professional development is an important component of the internship program, and we offer outside activities and networking opportunities to enhance a student's exposure to the horticultural environment. We also offer a speaker's forum, covering topics relevant to the company and your professional development.

Requirements

  • Major in Plant Science, Horticultural Sciences, Agriculture, Landscape Management, Urban Forestry, Agricultural Mechanization, Construction, Design or Architecture, or Business.
  • Interest in learning all aspects of the landscape industry.
  • Can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Strong communication skills.

Compensation

We offer a competitive hourly wage and monthly housing stipend for eligible students because we remember what it's like to be in college and trying to save money!
