Are you a highly skilled commercial driver who takes pride in safety, professionalism, and developing others? Do you have a passion for sharing your knowledge and helping individuals build successful careers in trucking and transportation?

We are seeking an experienced and motivated CDL Instructor/Training Manager to join our training team. This role is ideal for a professional driver who wants to make a lasting impact by training, coaching, and mentoring future commercial drivers. As a CDL Instructor, you will play a critical role in preparing students to become safe, confident, and industry-ready professionals while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and company training standards.

Position Summary

The CDL Instructor is responsible for delivering comprehensive classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction to students pursuing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The instructor will assess student performance, provide individualized coaching, maintain accurate training documentation, and ensure students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to pass CDL examinations and succeed in the transportation industry.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Classroom Instruction

  • Deliver engaging and interactive classroom lessons covering CDL curriculum requirements.
  • Teach students federal and state transportation laws, FMCSA regulations, DOT compliance standards, Hours-of-Service requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Explain vehicle systems, trip planning, cargo securement, accident prevention, and transportation safety procedures.
  • Utilize instructional materials, presentations, demonstrations, and real-world scenarios to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Prepare students for CDL permit examinations and endorsement testing.

Behind-the-Wheel Training

  • Conduct hands-on driving instruction in accordance with Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards and state licensing requirements.
  • Train students on:
    • Vehicle control and maneuvering
    • Backing techniques
    • Coupling and uncoupling procedures
    • Lane management
    • Defensive driving
    • Hazard recognition
    • City, highway, and rural driving operations
    • Adverse weather driving techniques
  • Demonstrate proper operating procedures and safe driving habits.
  • Monitor student progress and provide constructive performance feedback.

Range and Skills Training

  • Instruct students in pre-trip inspections and vehicle safety checks.
  • Train students on offset backing, straight-line backing, alley docking, parallel parking, and other required CDL skills.
  • Evaluate student proficiency and readiness for skills testing.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment and training vehicles.

Compliance and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate attendance, performance, and training records.
  • Ensure compliance with FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training requirements.
  • Document student evaluations and progress reports.
  • Assist with regulatory audits and accreditation requirements.
  • Report safety concerns and training issues promptly.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Previous CDL mentoring, training, or coaching experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of verifiable Class A commercial driving or training experience.
  • Experience operating tractor-trailers in over-the-road, regional, local, or specialized transportation environments.

Licensing Requirements

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • No serious DOT violations or preventable accidents within the past specified period.
  • Ability to meet all state and federal instructor qualification requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of FMCSA regulations and CDL licensing requirements.
  • Strong understanding of commercial vehicle operations and safety practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly to individuals with varying learning styles.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and mentor students effectively.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and training management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDL Instructor Certification.
  • Experience teaching adult learners.
  • ELDT training experience.
  • Knowledge of transportation industry recruiting and workforce development.
  • Experience with fleet safety or driver management programs.
