Job description

Position Overview

The Equipment Operator performs skilled and semi‑skilled work in the maintenance and construction of county highways, roads, secondary roads, rights‑of‑way, drainage systems, and related structures. This position operates a variety of heavy equipment and multi‑axle trucks used to repair and maintain native, gravel, and paved roads. Work assignments may occur anywhere within Elbert County at the discretion of the Director of Public Works. The operator must be able to safely operate all vehicles requiring a Class A Commercial Driver’s License and perform additional duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Respond to off‑duty callouts for Public Health, Safety, and Welfare emergency operations. (snow operations/flooding)
  • Safely and efficiently operate:
    • Truck and trailer
    • Plow truck
    • Tandem and trailer
    • Skid loader
    • Mini excavator
    • Wheel loader
    • Tree chipper
  • Perform safe equipment loading, securing/tie‑down, and offloading procedures.
  • Conduct basic preventative maintenance on skid loaders, tandems, and trailers.
  • Maintain general equipment knowledge and proper care practices.
  • Maintain and use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) properly.
  • Install, repair, and extend culverts and drainage structures.
  • Perform tree removal, brush clearing, and right‑of‑way cleanup.
  • Carry out labor‑intensive tasks related to drainage, ditching, debris removal, erosion control, and site preparation.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

  • Possess or be willing to obtain a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement.
  • Highly adaptable and able to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Able to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and safely operate tools and equipment required for assigned tasks.
  • Must follow all departmental safety rules, regulations, and employee handbook policies.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Able to pass a criminal background check.
  • This is a safety‑sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to varying weather conditions; some tasks may occur in a shop or office setting. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
