TITLE: Yoga Instructor

REPORTS: Director of Recreational Services

FLSA CODE: Non-Exempt

PROGRAM: George Rosenfeld Center for Recovery - 13 Hell Gate Cir. New York, NY 10035 (Ward's Island)

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

The Yoga Instructor supports clients in recovery across OASAS facilities by leading trauma-informed yoga sessions designed to reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and promote physical well-being. This role blends traditional yoga instruction with an understanding of addiction recovery, creating a safe, empowering environment for clients.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Lead group yoga classes that are tailored to clients in various stages of recovery, ensuring each session supports grounding, mindfulness, and gentle physical movement.

2.Use trauma-sensitive language, sequencing, and modifications to create a safe environment where clients feel empowered and in control of their practice.

3.Encourages clients to adopt healthy routines, practice self-care, and develop positive coping strategies that support long-term recovery outside of group sessions.

4.Track attendance for sessions to record progress and participation.

5.Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings if applicable and case conferences.

6.Attends all required training.

7.Participates in quality improvement activities.

8.Adheres to policies on time and attendance and is flexible with scheduling as needed.

9.Other relevant duties as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1.Certified Yoga Instructor.

2.Experience working in behavioral health, addiction treatment, or other therapeutic environments.

3.Strong understanding of mindfulness practices and their role in recovery.

4.Ability to adapt instruction for clients with physical limitations or emotional sensitivities.

5.Excellent communication, empathy, and boundary-setting skills.

6.CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

7.Proficiency with computer operation (Microsoft Word, Excel, AWARDS, and Outlook programs).
