POSITION:
Livonia Public Schools is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Router/Dispatcher to support the daily operations of the Transportation Department. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and timely student transportation by coordinating bus routes, communicating with drivers, and responding to real-time operational needs. This role also supports departmental staffing processes and operational projects as needed.
DISTRICT OVERVIEW:
Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 13,300 students pre-K - post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $175 million, with a state funding of $9,608 per pupil.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Develop, maintain, and adjust school bus routes and schedules to ensure efficiency and compliance with district policies.
  • Dispatch drivers and monitor daily routes, addressing delays, breakdowns, or emergencies as they arise.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers and paraprofessionals, school staff, parents, and administrators regarding transportation matters.
  • Utilize routing and dispatch using "Transfinder" software to track vehicles and manage route data.
  • Respond to incidents and provide real-time problem-solving support.
  • Maintain accurate records, including route changes, driver assignments, and transportation logs.
  • Retrieve and provide bus video footage upon request, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with district policies and student privacy regulations.
  • Post and manage open routes for driver and paraprofessional positions while following contract language. Maintain organized bid sheets for union compliance and Transportation Department records.
  • Assist with planning transportation for field trips, athletics, and special events.
  • Support staffing and coverage as needed.
  • Complete special projects and assignments as directed by the supervisor.
  • Perform light clerical and office duties, including filing, sorting, and light cleaning.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and district procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or relevant experience required.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
  • Previous experience in dispatching, routing, logistics, or transportation operations preferred.
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and routing/dispatch software (or ability to learn quickly).
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of local geography and school district boundaries is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Fast-paced office environment with frequent communication via phone and radio.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while maintaining focus and accuracy.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, and movement throughout the workday.
  • May be required to work outdoors in various weather conditions to assist drivers or paraprofessionals.
  • Work hours may include early mornings and/or afternoon/evening shifts aligned with school transportation schedules.
  • Overtime may be required as determined by the supervisor.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
