What is a transition project manager?

Transition Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the smooth transfer of projects, services, or operations from one state to another, such as during mergers, system upgrades, or organizational changes. They plan, coordinate, and execute transition activities to minimize disruption and ensure that objectives are met within budget and timeline constraints. Their role often involves risk assessment, stakeholder communication, and process optimization to ensure a seamless transition and continued business performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transition project manager?

To thrive as a Transition Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, experience in change management, and often a relevant degree or certification like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools (such as MS Project, Jira, or Asana) and IT service management systems (like ITIL) is typically required. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills help you lead teams and navigate organizational change. These abilities are crucial to ensure seamless transitions, minimize disruptions, and achieve project goals on time and within budget.

What are some common challenges faced by transition project managers during organizational change initiatives?

Transition Project Managers often encounter challenges such as managing stakeholder expectations, ensuring clear communication across departments, and maintaining project timelines while adapting to evolving requirements. Navigating resistance to change from employees and addressing unforeseen operational disruptions are also frequent hurdles. Successful Transition Project Managers leverage strong interpersonal skills and a structured approach to problem-solving to guide teams smoothly through changes while minimizing risks to business continuity.

Job description

Project Manager
Summary

We are seeking a project-focused leader to oversee the global transition of a companyโ€™s IT managed services provider from one external vendor to another.  This role will coordinate activity across all regions and workstreams, ensuring dependencies, milestones, vendor deliverables, risks, staffing, cost, timing, and overall status are actively managed and clearly reported.  This is a project oversight and management role, not a hands-on technical delivery, programming, system configuration, or sprint management position.  No PMP or formal project management certification is required.
Requirements

  • Experience overseeing large, global IT implementations involving multiple regions, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Direct experience with IT managed services implementation, transition, or provider change initiatives.
  • Ability to coordinate approximately 15 simultaneous workstreams including dependencies, milestones, deliverables, risks, and decision points.
  • Strong vendor management skills including maintaining schedules, driving accountability, tracking deliverables, and escalating issues.
  • Detailed project planning and consistent reporting on cost, timing, staffing, risks, issues, and overall implementation status.
  • Ability to remove obstacles, mitigate implementation risks, and bring appropriate stakeholders together for major decisions.
  • Demonstrated disciplined use of project or performance management tools and strong documentation practices.
  • Ability to work within one hour of the Minneapolis time zone.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting IT managed services in a plant-support or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience coordinating global implementation activity across complex enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with tools used for project management, performance management, workstream tracking, and executive reporting.
  • Experience preparing supplier or candidate submittal summaries that clearly describe implementation scale, geographic scope, vendor coordination, risk mitigation, deliverables, and reporting responsibilities.

This is a 6-month-plus Contract opportunity with potential for hire with our MN client.  Low-cost employee benefits, paid time off, paid Holidays, and a 401(k) (with an immediately vested company match) are available with TriCom during the contract period.  H-1B visa sponsorship is not available for this position.  No third-parties, please.
