As of Jul 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for transcription in Rutherford, NJ is $23.07, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.62 and $25.48 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to start a career in transcription?

To start a career in transcription, gain strong listening and typing skills, familiarize yourself with transcription software and industry standards, and consider obtaining certification from organizations like the American Transcription Association. Many transcription jobs are remote and require a reliable computer and internet connection, with flexible schedules suitable for part-time or freelance work.

What are some common challenges faced by transcriptionists and how can they be managed?

Transcriptionists often encounter challenges such as difficult audio quality, heavy accents, and overlapping speakers, which can slow down the transcription process. Managing these challenges requires patience, strong listening skills, and familiarity with transcription software that allows for easy pausing and rewinding. Building a quiet, distraction-free workspace and using high-quality headphones can also make a significant difference. Over time, transcriptionists develop strategies to quickly identify speakers and context, improving speed and accuracy.

What is a transcriptionist?

A transcriptionist is a professional who listens to audio or video recordings and converts the spoken words into written text. This work is commonly used in fields such as medical, legal, and general business, where accurate records of conversations, meetings, or interviews are needed. Transcriptionists must have strong listening skills, attention to detail, and fast, accurate typing. They may work for transcription companies, as freelancers, or directly for organizations needing transcription services.

Are transcription jobs still in demand?

Transcription jobs remain in demand, especially in fields like healthcare, legal, and media, where accurate audio-to-text conversion is essential. The growth of remote work and digital content has sustained the need for transcriptionists skilled in using tools like foot pedals and transcription software.

What Are the Qualifications to Get a Transcription Job?

You need excellent typing skills to become a transcriptionist. Many data entry transcription jobs are entry-level, and your employer provides on-the-job training. However, you may need a certificate to work as a legal transcriptionist, and you need an associate degree to become a medical transcriptionist. You also need good listening skills, writing skills, and the ability to concentrate on the task at hand. For intelligent transcription and edited transcription, you must understand the nuance and context of the text to make appropriate corrections.

What is the difference between Transcription vs Captioning?

AspectTranscriptionCaptioning
Required CredentialsTyping skills, listening skills, sometimes certificationTyping skills, listening skills, often certification or training
Work EnvironmentHome or office, flexible hoursSame as transcription, often live or pre-recorded
Industry UsageLegal, medical, generalMedia, entertainment, broadcasting
Search & Comparison IntentTranscription vs Captioning

Both transcription and captioning involve converting audio to text, but transcription focuses on creating written records of spoken content, while captioning adds synchronized text to videos for viewers. Transcription is used across various industries for documentation, whereas captioning is essential for media accessibility and broadcasting. While they share skills like typing and listening, captioning often requires additional knowledge of timing and formatting for videos.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Transcriptionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Transcriptionist, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing, and a good command of language and grammar, typically with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with transcription software, foot pedals, and word processing tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong organizational skills help set exceptional transcriptionists apart. These abilities ensure the production of precise, timely transcripts critical for legal, medical, and business documentation.

Can I be a transcriber with no experience?

Transcription jobs often do not require prior experience, but strong listening skills, attention to detail, and good typing speed are essential. Many employers provide training or require passing a skills test before hiring new transcribers.

How much money can I make as a transcriptionist?

Transcriptionists typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on experience, specialization, and the complexity of the audio. Some freelance transcriptionists can charge higher rates for specialized fields like medical or legal transcription, which may increase overall earnings. Income can vary based on workload, efficiency, and the platforms used for work.
