What is a training and development manager?

Training and Development Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing programs that enhance the knowledge and skills of an organization’s employees. They assess training needs, develop curriculum, and coordinate or deliver training sessions to ensure staff are equipped to perform their jobs effectively. These managers also monitor the effectiveness of training programs and make improvements as needed, often working closely with department heads and executives to align training initiatives with business goals.

What does a training and development manager do?

As a training and development manager, your primary responsibilities are to cultivate training programs for the employees at your company and oversee the training and development staff in the HR department. Your job duties include identifying the training needs of employees, researching existing training programs and coordinating with those vendors, aligning training materials and resources with your company’s business goals, and keeping the cost of training programs within budget spending limits. As a manager, you must train your staff in methods of teaching and learning and evaluate their performance in implementing training programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a training and development manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Training and Development Manager, you need expertise in instructional design, adult learning principles, and a bachelor's or master's degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), e-learning authoring tools, and relevant certifications such as CPTD or SHRM-CP are highly beneficial. Strong communication, leadership, and analytical skills help you engage learners and assess organizational training needs. These capabilities are crucial for developing effective training programs that boost employee performance and support organizational goals.

They may also need to navigate logistical hurdles like scheduling sessions around operational demands and measuring the effectiveness of training initiatives. Successful managers typically collaborate closely with department leaders, leverage feedback, and use data-driven approaches to continuously improve training outcomes.

Job description

Description

Who We Are

Beyond Marketing (BMK) is a full-service marketing agency with 35 years of history right here in the greater Wheeling area. We work with clients across a wide range of industries including banking, healthcare, hospitality, tourism, entertainment, and more, delivering everything from brand strategy and advertising to digital marketing, media, and public relations.

We're one of only a few agencies of our kind in this region, and we're proud of the community we've grown up in. If you're a local talent looking to launch your career in a creative, fast-moving environment without having to leave the area to do it, keep reading.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Business Development Associate to join our team. This is an entry-level role built for someone who is driven, people-oriented, and ready to learn. You don't need a sales background to apply - you need energy, curiosity, and the kind of personality that makes people want to do business with you.

You'll work closely with our Business Development Manager, who will not only train you, but remain a hands-on partner. Over time, you'll take on increasing ownership of BMK's business development efforts including building a sales pipeline, engaging prospects, supporting proposals, and helping grow the agency.

What You'll Do

Once you've completed training and onboarding, your day-to-day will look something like this:

  • Identify, research, and engage leads, prospects, and referral sources in our target markets
  • Promote the BMK brand through networking events, community outreach, and public relations initiatives
  • Use our CRM and sales tools to build, track, and manage a growing pipeline of opportunities
  • Nurture relationships with existing clients to generate repeat business and referrals
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of proposals
  • Support the agency's own marketing efforts
  • Work toward established sales goals, with a focus on consistent progress and growth
  • Follow best practices and bring fresh ideas to how we develop and refine our processes

Requirements

Who You Are

We're not looking for someone who has done this before.  We're looking for someone who is built for it. Here's what we mean:

  • You're energetic, charismatic, and confident.  You light up a room and people remember you
  • You listen as well as you talk.  You're genuinely curious about people and their needs
  • You're organized and self-motivated, with the ability to manage your own priorities
  • You communicate clearly, both in conversation and in writing
  • You're comfortable with technology and can learn new tools and applications quickly
  • You're local to the Wheeling area and want to build your career here

Bonus Points (But Not Required)

We'd love it if you have a background in marketing, advertising, or graphic design - whether its a degree or simply coursework. It's not a dealbreaker if you don't, but it helps you hit the ground running in an agency environment.

What We Offer

We take care of our people. BMK offers a competitive benefits package because we know that doing your best work starts with feeling supported outside of it.

  • Competitive base salary of $35,000, plus commission with real earning potential
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Generous PTO and paid parental leave
  • A structured onboarding and training experience.  We set you up to succeed
  • A front-row seat at one of the region's few full-service marketing agencies
  • A team that's invested in your growth and development
  • The chance to build a meaningful career close to home
