Trainee Unity 3D Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Trainee Unity 3D Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trainee Unity 3D Developer, you need a solid understanding of C# programming, basic 3D math, and a keen interest in game development, often backed by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with the Unity engine, version control systems like Git, and tools such as Visual Studio is typically required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and effective teamwork skills help you stand out in collaborative and iterative development environments. These skills ensure you can contribute effectively to game projects, adapt to evolving requirements, and grow within the fast-paced industry.

What types of projects and tasks can a Trainee Unity 3D Developer expect to work on during their initial months?

As a Trainee Unity 3D Developer, you can expect to start by assisting with basic game object creation, scripting simple behaviors, and debugging existing features under the supervision of senior developers. You'll likely collaborate closely with artists, designers, and other programmers to implement interactive elements, test prototypes, and help optimize performance. Over time, you'll gradually take on more complex tasks, such as integrating assets, refining user interfaces, and contributing to code reviews, all within a supportive team environment. This hands-on experience is designed to build your confidence and technical skills, setting a strong foundation for future growth.

What does a Trainee Unity 3D Developer do?

A Trainee Unity 3D Developer learns to create interactive 3D content, such as games or simulations, using the Unity engine. They typically assist in designing, coding, and testing game mechanics, environments, and user interfaces under the guidance of more experienced developers. Trainees also spend time learning C# programming, understanding Unity's workflow, and gaining experience with 3D assets and animation. The role is designed to build foundational skills for a career in game development or real-time 3D applications.

What is the difference between Trainee Unity 3D Developer vs Junior Unity 3D Developer?

AspectTrainee Unity 3D DeveloperJunior Unity 3D Developer
Required CredentialsBasic knowledge of Unity, programming fundamentalsProficiency in Unity, C# scripting, some project experience

Job description

About Overland AI
Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Overland AI is transforming land operations for modern defense. The company leverages over a decade of advanced research in robotics and machine learning, as well as a field-test forward ethos, to deliver combined capabilities for unit commanders. Our OverDrive autonomy stack enables ground vehicles to navigate and operate off-road in any terrain without GPS or direct operator control. Our intuitive OverWatch C2 interface provides commanders with precise coordination capabilities essential for mission success.
Overland AI has secured funding from prominent defense tech investors including 8VC and Point 72, and built trusted partnerships with DARPA, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command. Backed by eight-figure contracts across the Department of Defense, we are strengthening national security by iterating closely with end users engaged in tactical operations.
Role Summary
Overland AI is looking for a meticulous and spatially-aware 3D Data Annotator to join our team. You will work directly with 3D data captured from our autonomous vehicle platforms, providing the high-quality, ground-truth annotations that drive our AI models.
This role requires a strong, intuitive understanding of 3D space. It is an excellent fit for professionals who already have experience navigating complex spatial data, such as those with backgrounds in GIS, game level design, 3D modeling, or architecture.
Key Responsibilities
  • Use specialized software tools to accurately label and annotate objects, terrains, and surfaces within complex 3D datasets.
  • Interpret raw point cloud data and 3D environments captured by our autonomous vehicle sensor suites.
  • Maintain strict adherence to annotation guidelines to ensure high standards of data quality and consistency.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to refine labeling guidelines and provide feedback to improve tooling workflows.
  • Identify and document edge cases, anomalies, or unexpected variables within the collected sensor data.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in 3D annotation, 3D modeling, GIS, level design, architectural drafting, or related spatial data field
  • Demonstrated experience using at least one 3D software tool (e.g., Blender, Maya, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Unreal Engine, Unity, CloudCompare, or similar)

Desired Qualifications & Experience
  • Direct experience with LiDAR point cloud processing, photogrammetry workflows, or autonomous vehicle sensor data
  • Proven ability to interpret and manipulate point cloud data, 3D meshes, or volumetric datasets
  • Demonstrated proficiency in navigating, manipulating, and interpreting 3D spatial environments.
  • Track record of producing annotation, modeling, or drafting work that meets defined quality standards and specifications
  • Proven ability to follow technical guidelines and maintain consistency across large datasets (demonstrated through prior work samples or references)
  • Familiarity with version control or annotation quality assurance processes
  • Experience collaborating with engineering or data science teams in an iterative development environment
  • Prior experience working specifically with autonomous vehicle data, LiDAR point clouds, or photogrammetry.
  • Familiarity with common 3D, GIS, or engine software tools (e.g., Blender, Maya, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Unreal Engine, Unity).

Location
This position will be located on-site in Seattle, WA.
Compensation
The annual base pay for this position is $90,000 - $130,000
Benefits
  • Equity compensation
  • Best-in-class healthcare, dental, and vision plans
