Job description

Job Purpose & Position Overview:
The Paramedic trainee position is designed to provide on-the-job training and educational development in emergency medical services. The trainee will work alongside certified paramedics, EMT-A and EMT-B and other medical services staff to assist in providing pre-hospital care to patients. Over the course of a four-year period, the trainee will acquire the skills and qualifications necessary to become a certified paramedic. The position provides exposure to emergency care in field settings, supporting EMS operations while developing a comprehensive understanding of medical emergency protocols.
Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Assist certified paramedics and EMTs in responding to emergency calls, including transporting patients and providing basic life support.
  • Observe and participate in patient assessments and emergency medical interventions under supervision.
  • Aid in preparing and restocking emergency medical vehicles, ensuring equipment is sanitized and functional.
  • Monitor and record patient conditions, treatments, and outcomes as instructed by senior medical personnel.
  • Attend scheduled classroom training, hands-on practice sessions, and assessments to meet educational and certification milestones.
  • Comply with all safety regulations and protocols while supporting emergency medical response teams.
  • Communicate effectively with EMS staff, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in ongoing education and professional development to complete and receive a paramedic certification within the four-year period.
  • There will be an expectation to enroll in EMT B classes and/or Paramedic classes as soon as employed and become certified
  • During the training period the expectation will be for the Trainee to serve as an EMS driver or other roles as their qualifications increase.

Qualifications/Skills:
  • High school diploma or GED is preferred for this position
  • Enrollment or willingness to enroll in an accredited paramedic training program.
  • Valid CPR/BLS certification or obtain certification within the first three months of employment.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and moving patients and operating in various field conditions.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License & be insurable.

Environmental & Safety Concerns:
  • Experience frequent transition from hot to cold and from humid to dry atmospheres.
  • Work in wet, icy, or muddy areas.
  • Face exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis B or HIV.
  • Exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with medical emergencies, major trauma and or burn victims. Operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, and in enclosed or confined spaces.

Training Requirements:
  • Enrollment in an accredited paramedic training program within 1 year
  • Regular on-site training with certified paramedics to gain practical experience.
  • CPR/BLS Certification

Physical Requirements:
  • Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.

Language Requirements:
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
