What does a trainee process engineer do?

A Trainee Process Engineer assists in designing, implementing, and optimizing industrial processes within manufacturing or production environments. They work under the supervision of senior engineers to learn about process flow, equipment operation, data analysis, and safety protocols. Their responsibilities often include collecting process data, helping to troubleshoot issues, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. This role provides hands-on training and practical experience to prepare for more advanced engineering positions.

What are the typical responsibilities of a trainee process engineer during their first year on the job?

In their first year, a Trainee Process Engineer typically supports senior engineers by collecting and analyzing process data, assisting in troubleshooting production issues, and participating in process improvement projects. They often spend time shadowing experienced team members to learn about equipment, safety procedures, and industry regulations. Additionally, trainees may be involved in drafting technical documentation and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as maintenance, quality, and operations. This hands-on experience helps build foundational knowledge and prepares them for increased responsibilities as they progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trainee process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trainee Process Engineer, you need a solid educational background in chemical, mechanical, or process engineering, often with a relevant degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS or MATLAB), safety protocols, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help distinguish successful candidates in this role. These competencies ensure process efficiency, safety compliance, and collaborative project execution within industrial environments.

A growing AI Enablement team

You will join a growing team of AI professionals focused on helping Metso put AI into practice and scale what works. The team plays a key role in Metso's AI-accelerated transformation, giving you a front-row seat to shape how AI creates real business impact across a global industrial company. For early-career talent, this is a unique chance to learn from experienced colleagues, build a strong professional foundation, and shape a career path in one of the most important technology areas for the future.

How we work

Metso uses a distributed AI model, so you will collaborate closely with central functions, business teams, and IT. You will also be part of a wider network of developers, data professionals, and AI practitioners working together to deliver responsible and scalable AI solutions.

What you will do

  • Build AI-enabled solutions for validated business opportunities, moving from problem definition to working solution with clear business value, adoption path, and measurable outcomes.

  • Work directly with business owners, central functions, IT, data teams, and external partners to translate business challenges into concrete AI solution designs and implementation plans.

  • Develop practical solution components such as data pipelines, integrations, prompts, workflows, user interfaces, APIs, and automation logic needed to make AI solutions usable in real business processes.

  • Design for scale from the start by creating reusable patterns, documentation, and components that can be adopted across teams, business areas, and future AI use cases.

  • Focus on sustainable, scalable solutions rather than one-off experiments, ensuring that prototypes have a clear route to operation, ownership, maintainability, and responsible AI use.

  • Contribute to Metso's AI delivery model by capturing learnings, improving ways of working, and helping build a connected community of AI practitioners across the company.

What you'll bring

  • 0-5 years relevant experience in a related field or a degree completed or nearing completion in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. We warmly encourage applications from recent graduates and students close to graduation.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals gained through studies, thesis work, internships, trainee roles, GitHub projects, hackathons, open-source contributions, or personal projects.

  • Experience with, coursework in, or genuine curiosity about modern AI, such as large language models, prompting, retrieval approaches, automation, and how cloud platforms support enterprise AI solutions.

  • A builder's mindset: pragmatic, curious, outcome-focused, and motivated to learn by solving real problems with colleagues from business, functions, and technology teams.

  • Eagerness to learn quickly, reason about trade-offs, and take initiative to move things forward.

  • Strong ability to communicate with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

  • Exposure to cloud-native development, APIs, Git, or rapid-prototyping frameworks. Our technology stack will evolve, so we value learning ability over experience with specific tools.

  • You do not need to know every tool or have years of industry experience. We value learning agility, ownership, collaboration, and the ambition to grow into an AI professional who can make a real difference.

What's in it for you

At Metso, you will combine meaningful work with opportunities to learn, grow, and make an impact in a supportive and inclusive environment. You'll be part of a global team where collaboration, wellbeing, and continuous learning are part of everyday work. This role gives you a strong platform to shape your career in AI while contributing to solutions that matter for a global industrial company.

You will gain hands-on experience at the intersection of AI, software engineering, industrial business processes, and enterprise transformation, while receiving opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues and build Metso's long-term capability for AI-enabled solutions.

We support your growth and wellbeing by offering:

  • Purpose-led work: Contribute to enabling sustainable modern life and transforming the industry.

  • Wellbeing: Access to wellbeing programs, occupational healthcare, and supportive services.
