Position Summary
This posting is focused on recruiting applicants who can portray patient cases within the age range of 56 to 65 years old.
Position Summary
The Standardized Patient/Trainee (SP) is a community member trained to portray a patient case in a consistent and standardized manner during simulated clinical encounters. Under training and close supervision in a clinical educational setting, the SP consistently and accurately portrays specific emotions, behaviors, medical histories, and physical symptoms while interacting with health care students. These simulations support student learning and assessment of clinical, communication, and patient care skills.
This is an on-call, non-benefits-eligible position with varied work hours based on program needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Memorizes a case script detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations.
  2. Presents case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations.
  3. Remains in a specific patient character as trained when responding to student questions.
  4. Accurately remembers encounters with students for the purpose of scoring student behaviors.
  5. Maintains confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors and feedback evaluations.
  6. Provides educationally constructive verbal feedback within a structured format, as appropriate to the position.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  1. Ability to accurately and convincingly maintain a specified character as trained.
  2. Ability to work flexible hours on a scheduled on-call basis.
  3. Ability to recall case information, as cued by students in a role-play situation.
  4. Ability to recall and accurately score student behaviors.
  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality of case and student information.
  6. Ability to understand and follow directions and incorporate trainer feedback.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Casting and Participation Requirements
This posting is focused on recruiting applicants who can portray patient cases within the age range of 56 to 65 years old.
To support standardized educational experiences, selected individuals will be asked to provide demographic and medical history information that assists with case assignment and casting. Standardization requirements may limit participation in some cases based on physical characteristics or medical conditions that affect consistency across portrayals.
Standardized Patients must be able to: move all extremities without difficulty, step up and down from an exam table, and quickly change from a gown to clothing.
They must also have reliable access to e-mail, which is critical for timely response to communication of upcoming case portrayals.
Selected individuals must be willing to:
  • Complete a demographic and medical history questionnaire for case-matching purposes.
  • Participate in recorded simulations for educational and assessment purposes.
  • Wear a hospital gown, with or without undergarments, as needed for case portrayal.
  • Participate in interviews and non-invasive physical examinations conducted by clinical students as part of simulated clinical encounters.
