Trainee Minerals Processing Engineer information

What is a trainee minerals processing engineer?

A Trainee Minerals Processing Engineer is an entry-level professional who assists in the extraction and processing of minerals from ores. They work under the supervision of experienced engineers to learn about crushing, grinding, separation, and concentration techniques used in mineral processing plants. Their responsibilities typically include monitoring equipment, collecting samples, analyzing data, and ensuring that safety and environmental standards are met. This role serves as a foundation for gaining practical experience and advancing to more senior engineering positions within the mining and minerals industry.

What does a trainee minerals processing engineer do?

As a Trainee Minerals Processing Engineer, your daily activities often include monitoring ore processing operations, collecting and analyzing samples, and assisting with troubleshooting plant equipment. You'll also collaborate closely with senior engineers and plant operators to implement process improvements and ensure safety protocols are followed. These tasks are essential for optimizing production efficiency and quality, while also supporting the team's broader objectives of maximizing resource recovery and minimizing environmental impact. Over time, you'll gain exposure to project management and technical reporting, which can open pathways to more advanced engineering roles.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a trainee minerals processing engineer?

To thrive as a Trainee Minerals Processing Engineer, you need a solid understanding of mineral processing principles, typically supported by a degree in chemical, metallurgical, or mining engineering. Familiarity with process simulation software, laboratory testing equipment, and safety management systems is commonly required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for optimizing mineral recovery, ensuring safety, and contributing to efficient plant operations.

What is the difference between Trainee Minerals Processing Engineer vs Junior Minerals Processing Engineer?

AspectTrainee Minerals Processing EngineerJunior Minerals Processing Engineer
QualificationsTypically pursuing or recently completed relevant degree (e.g., Mining, Mineral Processing)Usually holds a degree in a related field, with some practical experience
Work EnvironmentTraining programs, supervised tasks, entry-level site workMore independent responsibilities, project involvement
Employer UsageInternship or apprenticeship programs within mining companiesEntry-level full-time roles in mineral processing plants or consulting firms

The main difference is that a Trainee Minerals Processing Engineer is in a learning or internship phase, focusing on gaining foundational skills, while a Junior Minerals Processing Engineer has completed their education and is taking on more responsibilities in processing operations.

You will lead the design, deployment, and operation of first-of-its-kind refining processes for critical minerals, while also supporting development of software for automated plant optimization. This position is highly hands-on and will play a critical role in bridging R&D and Operations, ensuring processes are robust, safe, cost-effective, and suitable for commercial production.
What You'll Do
  • Work closely with Pilot Plant Technicians to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve pilot-scale processing equipment
  • Design experiments to evaluate process performance, recovery, throughput, and product quality
  • Create and maintain key engineering and operational documentation such PFDs, HMBs, P&IDs, Operating Procedures, and Process Control Narratives
  • Lead equipment design scopes from concept, through procurement, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and handover to Operations
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, commercial plant design engineers, project execution teams, and more to scale designs from lab to the pilot to production scale
  • Work closely with the software and machine learning teams to develop and implement reactor and plant optimization algorithms
  • Travel to pilot and commercial sites to drive commissioning, startup, and ramp-up alongside operations & plant design teams
What You'll Bring
  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting R&D scale up, pilot plant operation, and/or commercial production in minerals processing, chemicals, specialty materials, oil & gas, or similar industry
  • Strong understanding of reaction engineering, solid-liquid separation, leaching, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and/or similar unit operations
  • Hands-on experience designing, commissioning, and operating pilot or commercial-scale process equipment
  • Ability to design experiments, problem-solve, and analyze complex datasets
  • Strong commitment to Health & Safety and experience with risk management, management of change, and hazard assessment
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and teamwork skills
