THE POSITION

The Civil Engineer Trainee position with the Department of Environmental Protection offers an exciting chance to grow your engineering skills while protecting Pennsylvania's natural resources. This role gives you hands-on experience with important waterway and environmental projects across the region. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports statewide programs that involve hydrology, hydraulics, and environmental regulatory work for waterways and flood plain management. As a Civil Engineer Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Permit Review: Examine transportation project applications for compliance with environmental laws
  • Field Inspection: Conduct site visits to evaluate hydrology and hydraulic conditions
  • Technical Analysis: Prepare engineering evaluations related to waterway and flood plain management
  • Regulatory Coordination: Collaborate with program staff on requirements under Chapters 102, 105, and 93
  • Training Development: Engage in structured training to learn hydraulic engineering duties during the 12-month trainee period


Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
    • Travel required for trainings and site visits.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved?location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Norristown, PA. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Most selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,658.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of civil engineering experience and a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field that includes or is supplemented by major coursework in civil engineering.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This position also requires possession of a valid driver's license which is not under suspension.

Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
