Job description

Description
The Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology in the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago is searching for full-time Medical Physicist faculty members at any rank.
The Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology is a growing, multi-institutional academic program with partnerships across the University of Chicago health system, including collaborations with the University of Illinois Chicago and multiple suburban and regional sites. The department continues to expand its clinical and academic footprint, supported by major investments in cancer care, research, and innovation. The Section offers a highly collaborative research environment with strong connections to Radiology, Cancer Biology, Physics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, and translational oncology.
The Medical Physics Section includes 20 faculty and staff physicists, along with 10 dosimetrists and support personnel, supporting a comprehensive clinical program across multiple sites. Clinical operations treat approximately 200 patients per day using a wide range of advanced and established technologies, including IMRT, IGRT, framed and frameless SRS, SBRT, HDR brachytherapy, and prostate seed implants. Equipment resources include 10 Varian TrueBeams systems, Ethos with HyperSight, Brainlab ExacTrac with 6D couch, CT simulators, Bravos HDR afterloaders, and the Eclipse treatment planning system.
Appointees responsibilities include clinical service, independent and collaborative research, teaching, and mentorship of trainees and students, along with other scholarly activities. Faculty are actively engaged in the NIH T32-supported Graduate Program in Medical Physics and CAMPEP-accredited residency program. Research within the Medical Physics Section focuses on AI-enabled imaging and treatment planning, including fast and low-dose imaging, adaptive radiotherapy, motion management, auto-planning, brachytherapy innovation, and treatment response prediction, with the overarching goal of improving clinical outcomes, efficiency, and the therapeutic ratio of radiation therapy. Other duties will include teaching and supervision of trainees and students, and scholarly activity. Academic rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications. These positions are benefits-eligible. The University of Chicago offers a wide range of benefits programs and resources for eligible employees, including health, retirement, and paid time off. Information about the benefit offerings can be found in the Benefits Guidebook.
Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) Have a doctoral degree in medical physics or a closely related field, such as physics or engineering, and 2) Be eligible for American Board of Radiology certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics.
We are particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to our expanding strengths in AI, advanced imaging, and computational radiation oncology. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: 1) machine learning and deep learning; 2) medical imaging, image-guided radiotherapy and adaptive radiotherapy; 3) big data analytics and computational medical physics; 4) treatment planning, dosimetry, and translational radiotherapy research.
This is an outstanding opportunity to join a leading academic radiation oncology department with a strong tradition of discovery, an expanding system-wide clinical presence, and growing investment in AI, imaging, adaptive radiotherapy, and translational research. We are seeking exceptional candidates who are motivated to build innovative research programs while contributing to excellence in clinical care and education, and who are eager to help shape the future of medical physics through leadership in AI- and imaging-driven radiation oncology.
