Summary/Objective
This position offers a valuable training opportunity to learn how to monitor contractors' work for quality control and contract compliance. As a Transportation Construction Inspector Trainee, you'll be involved in roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity, gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of a Construction Manager or designated supervisor.
Essential Functions includes:
  • Inspects and monitors contractual field work which could include excavation, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures.
  • Reports contractor's daily operations.
  • Takes field measurements of pay items.
  • Reviews placement of and witness tests on construction materials.
  • Reviews lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations.
  • Oversees and enforces the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highways work zones and traffic control devices.
  • Maintains project records; including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates.
  • Reviews and monitors Equal Employment Opportunity/Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) documentation and compliance with Federal labor requirements/regulations for Federal-aid construction projects, ensuring contractor compliance with program requirements.
  • Obtains and maintains required certifications.

Work Environment
This job is performed in an office environment and or transportation construction job sites. This role routinely uses field and standard office equipment such as computers, tablets, phones, photocopiers, digital cameras, filing cabinets, nuclear gauges, surveying tools, and other field-testing equipment materials.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time seasonal position. Flexibility to meet client or contractor schedule is important.
Travel
Most assignments do not require more than an hour of travel to and from job sites. However, some assignments will require extensive regional travel each day and others could require staying out of town overnight if distance to job site is greater than 90 miles from home.
Requirements
Required/Preferred Education and Experience
  • Previous construction/design/engineering or construction inspector experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • High-School Diploma is required.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
The Construction Inspector Trainee is expected to be willing to learn the following skills:
  • Operating computer equipment.
  • Functional use of computer and/or iPad.
  • Read and interpret roadway, structure and bridge plans and specification.
  • Apply mathematical formulas.
  • Maintain detailed records.
  • Perform and document required materials testing.
  • Communicate with the client and contractor personnel and the general public.
