Trainee 3D Rigging Artist information
What are some common challenges faced by a trainee 3D rigging artist when working on their first projects?
As a Trainee 3D Rigging Artist, you may find it challenging to balance technical precision with artistic intent, especially when creating rigs that are both functional and intuitive for animators. Understanding the nuances of different character anatomies and adapting rigs to meet varied animation requirements can be complex. Additionally, you’ll likely need to troubleshoot unexpected deformations and collaborate closely with modelers and animators to ensure the rig meets production needs. Seeking feedback, practicing regularly, and learning from more experienced team members can help you overcome these initial hurdles.
What does a trainee 3D rigging artist do?
A Trainee 3D Rigging Artist is responsible for creating the digital skeletons and control systems that allow 3D models to move realistically in animation or visual effects projects. They work under the guidance of experienced rigging artists to learn industry-standard tools and techniques, such as setting up joints, skinning, and building control rigs. This position is often entry-level and serves as a foundation for more advanced rigging roles in animation, film, or gaming studios.
What is the difference between Trainee 3D Rigging Artist vs Junior 3D Rigging Artist?
| Aspect | Trainee 3D Rigging Artist | Junior 3D Rigging Artist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Basic knowledge, often in training or coursework | Some experience, portfolio development |
| Work Environment | Learning-focused, supervised projects | Independent tasks, collaborative teams |
| Industry Usage | Entry-level, training programs | Early career, supporting senior artists |
The Trainee 3D Rigging Artist is typically in training, focusing on learning foundational skills, while the Junior 3D Rigging Artist has some experience and handles more independent tasks. Both roles are essential in the early stages of a rigging career, with the trainee focusing on skill development and the junior taking on real-world projects under supervision.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trainee 3D rigging artist, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Trainee 3D Rigging Artist, you need a basic understanding of 3D modeling, anatomy, and animation principles, often supported by a degree or coursework in animation, computer graphics, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, and knowledge of scripting languages like Python are typically expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively with animators and other artists. These competencies ensure that characters and objects move realistically and efficiently within a production pipeline.

Job description
The Role
We'd like to conduct an experiment. Visit dbrand.com. Scroll through our product catalogue. As you're scrolling, try to guess which images are real-life photography, and which are renders.
If you're struggling, it's because we did a good job. Think you can do an even better one?
We're looking for a 3D Product Render Artist: someone who can take a raw CAD file from our industrial designers and turn it into an image asset so convincing, it'll make that test you just took even more challenging.
We hate to break it to you, but you're probably not that someone. If you agree, save us all some time and close this tab. If you'd like to prove us wrong... keep reading.
The Environment
The Environment
Still here? Excellent. dbrand thrives where other eCommerce companies have failed because our customers enjoy a revolutionary degree of commitment, engagement, and accessibility from us. Maintaining an internal culture of excellence, the likes of which our highly-engaged audience demands and deserves, is critical to dbrand's current and future success.
As our 3D Product Render Artist, that pressure is keenly felt. dbrand's audience owns the exact devices you're rendering - they know what the chamfer looks like, they know how the anodization plays with the light. They have opinions - strong ones, posted publicly, with a high degree of visibility. Get a highlight wrong and you'll hear about it before the webpage has finished loading.
Your role is to make sure they never get the chance. You'll live within the Photography team, feeding renders to our website, social channels, and packaging. You'll work with our Graphic Designers and Software Engineers to animate product pages, and with our Videography team to build 3D scenes and motion graphics. Full pipeline, start to finish: refine, layout, shade, light, render, animate.
At dbrand, your renders won't die in a slide deck. They'll be the first thing millions of people see when a new iPhone drops, and the last thing our competitors see before they try and fail to copy your work.
Before you get that opportunity, you'll need to prove yourself. Let's see if you've got what it takes...
- Agile: You're nimble. You're adaptable. You thrive in an environment where priorities can change in an instant.
- Analytical: Your decisions are driven by only one thing: data. You continue to master all the tools necessary to surface insights.
- Collaborative: You enjoy purposeful meetings. You value the contributions and perspectives of your colleagues as much as you do your CEO.
- Curious: You're eager to learn new concepts and master new skills. There's no useless tool in your arsenal.
- Disciplined: You never allow the details to slip, understanding that every bit of minutiae forms the bigger picture.
- Enthusiastic: You exhibit a contagious passion for solving problems OR finding solutions.
- Innovative: You develop new approaches to complex problems.
- Perfectionist: You persist until the smallest detail has been optimized. Giving less than 100% is not an option.
- Persistent: You've never failed. You've only experienced speed bumps on your path to success.
- Reliable: You live up to both verbal and written agreements. You can be trusted to work effectively, without oversight.
The Responsibilities
In order to make a positive impact as part of our team, your focus in this role will be to:
- Create realistic product renders for the dbrand website.
- Create animated 3D elements for dbrand drop pages.
- Create ad-hoc 3D elements as needed.
- Nice to have: Create animated 3D scenes and motion graphics for dbrand videos.
The Qualifications
- 5 years' professional experience
- Proficient knowledge of photographic and cinematic techniques (composition, advanced lighting, depth of field, editing) related to computer graphics production.
- Experience producing high-quality, photo-realistic product renders.
- Basic skills in 3D modelling / rigging / animation.
- Advanced skills in shading / texturing / UV mapping / lighting / rendering.
- Knowledge of converting industry standard CAD (STEP, STL, OBJ) files into workable 3D assets for production.
- Advanced competency in CG software (Blender is preferred, otherwise proficiency in Maya or Cinema 4D). Additional skills in Houdini, 3ds Max, are Unreal Engine are an asset, but not required.
- Ability to take Industrial CAD files of products, and take them through a full pipeline (refine, layout, shade, light, render, animate) to create technically proficient and creatively advanced cinematic compositions (i.e. reels for YouTube videos and TikTok, etc.).
- Core competency in Adobe software suite (Photoshop, Illustrator).
- Nice to have: Experience creating high-concept creative advertising animations.
- Nice to have: Basic knowledge of titling / motion graphics / captioning / transitions.
- Nice to have: Basic knowledge of video codecs / compression schemes / aspect ratios.
- Nice to have: Experience with 3D motion graphics design (2D motion graphics design is an asset).
- Nice to have: Basic knowledge of CGI VFX techniques (3D tracking, match move, HDRI lighting, etc.)
- Ability to self-direct and take ownership of a project within a given creative mandate.
- An impeccable communication style - your grasp on the English language is flawless.
- Detail-oriented, self-sufficient, resourceful, organized, and proactive.
- The instinct to help teammates thrive and the openness to learn from past experiences.
- The ability to solve complex problems (or know where to find the answer).
- Commitment to long-term growth and learning opportunities.
The job starts between $70,000 and $90,000 per year based on experience, with health, dental, vision, GRSP, and profit-sharing benefits. The position is fully remote, but when required, our HQ is located a few minutes west of Pearson Airport.
Still think you have what it takes to thrive in our agile, high-growth, fast-paced environment?
To be perfectly honest, we doubt it.
You're welcome to prove us wrong.
