How much do trainee 3d modeling animation jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for trainee 3d modeling animation in the United States is $78,472.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,500.00 and $98,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is AI replacing 3D animators?

AI tools are increasingly used to assist 3D modeling and animation processes, automating repetitive tasks and enhancing productivity. However, the role of a trainee 3D modeling animator still requires creative skills, artistic judgment, and technical expertise that AI cannot fully replicate, making human input essential in the industry.

How to become a 3D animator with no experience?

To become a 3D animator with no experience, start by learning industry-standard software such as Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max through online tutorials and courses. Build a portfolio by creating personal projects, and consider obtaining certifications or attending a training program to develop foundational skills in modeling, rigging, and animation. Gaining practical experience through internships or freelance work can also help establish your career in 3D animation.

Is there a demand for 3D animators?

The demand for 3D animators, including trainee roles, is strong across industries such as gaming, film, advertising, and virtual reality. Employers seek professionals skilled in software like Maya, Blender, or Cinema 4D, with a growing need for 3D modeling and animation expertise as digital content expands. Entry-level positions are available, but building a strong portfolio and technical skills increases job prospects.

What does a Trainee 3D Modeling Animation do?

A Trainee 3D Modeling Animation professional learns and assists in creating three-dimensional models and animations using specialized software. Their role typically involves supporting senior artists, practicing modeling techniques, and helping bring characters, environments, or objects to life for games, films, or commercials. They focus on developing their technical and artistic skills, following project guidelines, and receiving feedback to improve their work. This entry-level position is designed to build a strong foundation for a career in 3D animation and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Trainee 3D Modeling Animation, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trainee 3D Modeling Animation, you need a basic understanding of 3D design principles, modeling techniques, and animation fundamentals, often supported by formal education or coursework in animation or digital arts. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max is typically required, and foundational knowledge of rendering engines is beneficial. Creativity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are essential soft skills that help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are important for producing professional-quality animations, adapting to evolving technology, and collaborating effectively on creative projects.

What types of projects and team collaborations can a Trainee 3D Modeling Animation expect in their first year?

As a Trainee 3D Modeling Animation, you will typically work on a variety of entry-level projects such as creating basic 3D models, texturing, and assisting with simple animation tasks. You'll often collaborate closely with senior animators, modelers, and other departments like lighting and rigging to bring assets to life. The work environment is usually team-oriented, fostering learning through feedback and peer reviews. Over time, you'll have opportunities to take on more complex assignments and contribute to larger projects, which helps build your portfolio and skillset for future advancement.

How to get hired as a 3D animator?

To get hired as a 3D animator, build a strong portfolio showcasing your skills in software like Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max, and gain experience through internships or freelance projects. Developing proficiency in animation principles, storytelling, and understanding industry workflows increases employability, along with relevant certifications or training. Job description

Leidos currently has an opening for a 3D Modeler to work in our Orlando office. This is an opportunity to work on a high-fidelity vehicle modeling contract for the ACC ISR project. A 3D Modeler creates accurate three-dimensional representations of objects to support virtual simulation and training programs. This role contributes to research in emerging fields focused on digitally replicating the real world using image generators, game engines and other technologies.
The day-to-day work includes updating legacy workflows and models to meet modern game engine fidelity and specifications, while solving complex problems in a fast-paced environment. Solid communication skills and a collaborative mindset are essential, as the role requires cross-disciplinary collaboration and flexibility to meet a range of platform and project-specific requirements.
Primary Responsibilities
• Build high-quality, optimized hard-surface 3D models according to project specifications
• Collaborate with other 3D modelers and multi-disciplinary teams to refine assets for animation, static renders or real-time use
• Create and apply textures to achieve project-aligned visuals that are functional across multiple platforms
• Test models in target engines or renderers to ensure correct scale, style, topology, and functionality
• Document modeling pipelines and maintain organized version control of asset files
• Revise and iterate models based on feedback from technical leads and clients
Basic
• Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of relative experience
• Secret clearance/ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance
• Strong portfolio demonstrating clean topology, efficient UV mapping, high quality textures, the ability to create realistic representations of objects without stylization, and attention to detail • Proficiency in at least one major 3D modeling package
• Solid understanding of PBR workflows, texturing tools (Substance Suite, Mari, Photoshop) and geometry optimization
• Ability to interpret technical reference, scan data or photos into accurate 3D assets
• Excellent communication skills and comfort working in iterative, feedback-driven environments
• Experience with real-time engines (Unreal, Unity) and game asset pipelines
• Knowledge of basic rigging
• Experience constructing modular kits and utilizing trim sheets Preferred Qualifications List additional skills and experience that is "nice to have" but not required.
• Experience with organic modeling
• Familiarity with photogrammetry or LiDAR scan cleanup techniques
• Exposure to scripting (Python, MEL, Actionscripts) for automating repetitive tasks
• Experiencing in shooting, compositing and editing video content
• Experience creating motion graphics for animation and marketing content
• Experience manipulating imagery, elevation and vector data in geospatial tools such as Global Mapper, QGIS or ArcGIS
