Job description

All Aboard! If you've always wanted to drive a real train, and you love kids, the outdoors, and science, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham invites you to apply to be a Part-Time Train Driver. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic and customer focused, with a desire to support the Museum's mission by providing a safe and engaging ride according to the highest standards of safety while providing excellent customer services to riders and other guests.
Responsibilities:

  • Providing a safe and entertaining train ride to all visitors
  • Driving the train, ticket taking, loading / unloading guests, answering questions and delivering a scripted safety speech before the ride
  • Ensuring the safety of riders through careful train operation
  • Being knowledgeable of and adhering to all policies and procedures outlined in the train driver's manual
  • Maintaining mechanical operation of the train by performing daily checklist and immediately notifying the appropriate team members of any problems
  • Providing information to visitors about the train, including how and where to purchase tickets and assist with any problems related to ticketing
  • Between train rides, assist in other tasks including but not limited to detailing the train, train station, and train plaza
Actual Pay Rate: $15.00/hour Requirements
  • An interest in engaging the public and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse, multi-generational audience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A pleasant and engaging attitude while being observant and proactive
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies with provided training
  • Previous experience operating rides is a plus
  • Available to work a flexible schedule with weekday, weekend, and evening availability
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Valid driver's license and clear driving record
  • Physically able to sit for long periods of time and to walk on varied terrain up to 1 mile
  • Ability to lift items up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to speak another language is desirable.
This position is part-time and will range from 8 - 24 hours/week.
