Job description

We are currently searching for an experienced Traffic Project Engineer to support our Gulf Region located in Brentwood/Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga, TN. Candidates must be willing to relocate to Tennessee if out of state.


To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 8 years relevant experience in traffic engineering.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Prepare technical reports for traffic impact studies, interchange access requests, or safety studies
  • Prepare and management the development of traffic impact studies, land use planning, master plan studies, traffic signal warrant studies, bikeway planning and design, community and campus planning, technical report writing
  • Prepare traffic signal design plans for new intersections and signal modifications to facilitate multimodal accommodations
  • Prepare temporary traffic control plan/traffic management plan (TMP) and signing, pavement marking plans
  • Prepare Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) design plans
  • Assist in preparing conceptual intersection layouts, schematics, signal timings and engineering reports
  • Assist with and prepare roadway design plans
  • Leading or assisting in the development of project designs and directing EIs to successfully execute and deliver project work, while implementing client focused strategies
  • Aspires to work in a team environment and is willing to participate in business development efforts and meetings with clients.
  • Participates in ongoing development, communication and implementation of team concepts, programs and policies. Coordinates work to ensure best practices with all team members
  • Attends appropriate team meetings
  • Work on detailed engineering assignments including calculations and relatively standard work activities
  • Adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results
  • Identify and analyze problems using reasoning to arrive at conclusions
  • Apply standard practices and techniques to accomplish work assignments
  • Understands and adheres to assigned phase and task schedules and budgets to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of project
  • Adheres to company standards for quality assurance and quality control as defined in the quality manual

What you need to have:

  • BS in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 8-12 years relevant experience in traffic engineering
  • TDOT experience is preferred but not required
  • PE is required (Tennessee PE preferred)
  • PTP or PTOE is desired but not required
  • Must have proven skills in meeting DOT expectations, schedules and budgets
  • Knowledge in transportation planning, including comprehensive corridor analysis, DOT local programs, public involvement, safety and access, pedestrian and bicycle planning, multimodal planning and traffic operations
  • Familiarity with DOT traffic design standards, MUTCD and AASHTO
  • Proficiency in traffic analyses software such as VISSIM, Synchro/Simtraffic, Sidra Intersection, HCS
  • Proficiency with OpenRoads Designer desired but not required
  • ITE membership will be preferred, if not already a member
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)
