Job description
Position Description The position of Traffic Management Center Operator 1 serves as an entry-level operator in the Traffic Management Center (TMC) in the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT). In this role, the incumbent will observe traffic conditions via cameras located throughout Nashville and will report congestion or other concerns to the Traffic Management Center Supervisor or Traffic Management Center Operator 2. Performs related duties as assigned.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events.
These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge. Typical Duties Monitors and operates traffic management systems, such as cameras, sensors, signals, signs, and incident detection devices. Collects, analyzes, and disseminates real-time traffic information to the public, media, and other stakeholders.
Coordinates with emergency services, road maintenance crews, and other agencies to respond to traffic incidents, hazards, work sites in the right of way and special events. Collects and analyzes data on traffic monitoring activities to assist in addressing traffic management issues. Investigates issues and complaints related to traffic road conditions and assists in the resolution of complicated problems.
Generates reports for the TMC Supervisor to assess the effectiveness of traffic control strategies. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience working in a traffic management center as a monitor or one (1) year of experience in support of a traffic regulatory function. Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiar with real-time call center monitoring Experience with operational support for monitoring roadway conditions Experience with assisting in incident response coordination including dispatching roadside assistance, emergency services. Multitask and perform effectively in a fast-paced operational environment including operating multi-line phone systems and entering data into computer systems. Proficiency with implementation of traffic control strategies.
