Position Overview:
Mason County Central High School is seeking a qualified and organized Forensics Coach to lead our competitive speech and performance team for the Winter/Spring 2027 season. The Forensics program equips students with essential skills in leadership, critical thinking, public speaking, and dramatic performance through competitive events sanctioned by the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association (MIFA).
The Head Coach will oversee all facets of the program, including student performance instruction, financial and budget management, tournament scheduling, travel logistics, and overall team operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performance Coaching & Mentorship: Guide students in selecting, writing, editing, and staging material across both Public Address (e.g., Oratory, Informative, Sales, Broadcasting) and Dramatic/interpretation categories (e.g., Prose, Poetry, Dramatic, Humorous, Multiple).
- MIFA Competition & Rules Compliance: Maintain thorough knowledge of MIFA rules, guidelines, and event categories. Ensure all student performances, scripts, and submissions meet strict state competition requirements.
- Financial Management & Budgeting: Oversee the team's allocated funds and accounts. Manage entry fees, judge payments, supply budgets, and optional fundraising accounts in coordination with the district business office.
- Logistics & Event Organization: Handle all tournament registrations, coordinate team travel, arrange transportation and lodging, and schedule team participation in Saturday invitationals, regionals, and MIFA state tournaments.
- Team Leadership & Administration:ย Organize and conduct regular team practices starting in January 2027, manage tournament judging commitments, maintain open communication with parents and school administration, and model strong Spartan sportsmanship.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Prior Forensics Experience: Preferred background competing in or coaching high school or collegiate forensics program.
- MIFA Knowledge: Familiarity with the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association (MIFA) tournament structure, rules, procedures, and scoring system (Tabroom.com / SpeechWire experience preferred).
- Subject Matter Expertise: Solid foundational knowledge and instructional capability in public address, speech composition, acting, and oral interpretation.
- Administrative & Financial Skills: Demonstrated experience managing accounts, handling budgets, and planning multi-step event logistics and trip itineraries.
