Job description

Purpose of the Position

Oversees daily processing operations demonstrating commitment to employee safety, product quality, and teamwork. 

Essential Position Responsibilities - This is a Salary Exempt position. 

Manages plant staffing. Manages and guides assigned department’s supervisors and their respective direct reports. Estimates appropriate level of staff necessary to meet business and budgetary goals and objectives. Responsible for  scheduling of direct reports. Directs training and indoctrination of workers to achieve efficiency and to reduce  downtime. Acquaint workers with company policies and procedures. 

Determines job priorities. Committed to producing superior quality products at all times to eliminate customer complaints. Achieves customer satisfaction as a result of efficient operations. Reviews job orders to provide continuous supply of product required for operations. Reviews production, quality control, and other reports and statistics to plan and modify production activities. Plans, develops, and implements new methods and procedures  designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs, and achieve greater utilization of labor and materials. 

Maintains costing efficiency through efficient production operations and adequate product yields. Responsible for the allocation of resources in line with established cost structure. Compares production goals to actual production runs to measure efficiency. Accomplishes all paperwork in accordance with established time frame or record keeping  requirements. Oversees various processing operations and works with other departments in order to reduce waste. Manages and maintains office supplies at or below factory budget for assigned department. Responsible for the day-to-day supplies inventory. 

Responsible for facilities’ safety records. Ensures safety records are in line with the established goals set forth by Simmons. Verifies that production activities are performed in compliance with Simmons policies and procedures and OSHA regulations. Leads the department by example and motivates employees to maintain run rates, yields, and safety records at or above expectations. 

Maintains an audit/tour ready facility. Ensures facilities are audit/tour ready in compliance with Simmons policies and procedures, FDA/USDA regulations, and customer specifications. Interacts with members of different departments as well as customers and government agencies. 

Communicate at all levels in order to meet production expectations. Monitors quality, safety, scheduling, personnel and mechanical status of the plant. Collaborate with the functional areas of the operations such as Human Resources, Safety, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, Finance, Shipping, etc. Communicates effectively at all levels to provide appropriate directives and to resolve employee problems/conflicts. 

Manages employees. Directs and supervises employees’ work activities and monitors work performance. Collaborates with Human Resources to screen, interview and hire candidates. Administers disciplinary actions and recommends performance improvement actions in collaboration with the HR Manager. Monitors work performance and  recommends compensation decisions based on guidelines. Follows Simmons values to develop and maintain a  favorable working relationship with all employees. Promotes a cooperative and harmonious environment in order to facilitate positive employee morale, productivity, and continued improvement. 

Participates as a member of the Team. Participates in the ongoing development, communication and  implementation of team concepts, programs and policies; coordinates work to ensure best practices with all team members. Attends appropriate team meetings. As a member of the Team, fosters strong cohesiveness regarding all  major issues; e.g., direction, annual plan, budget, policy changes, etc. Accepts responsibility to quickly identify any  areas that lack cohesiveness, bringing them to the attention of the team leader and working with the team in a supportive manner to resolve issues and actively look for ways, and reinforce actions needed, to achieve synergy  possible within the larger organization. 

Simmons Operating systems principles and objectives: Is familiar with Simmons’ established operating systems (e.g. quality, security, office environment, company policies, LEAN); understands the responsibility to maintain  familiarity with the systems and this position’s role in support of these systems - including a consideration of the impact of individual actions on the systems and the responsibility to communicate concerns and improvement ideas.

Physical Activities: Enters and locates information on a computer. Visually verifies information, often in small print. Communicates with Customers, Vendors, or Employees via telephone, in person, and/or electronic mail. May present  information to small or large groups. Must be able to work in various temperatures. Move about in a manufacturing  environment and surrounding property. May travel via car or plane to various work locations.  

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): As required by visiting facility.  

Travel: Minimum local travel to other work sites. 

Technical Experience: 2 years experience supervising or leading employees in manufacturing or related fields. 

Industry Experience: Food processing organization. 

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field or 4 years experience in lieu of degree.
