Day-in-the-Life: Tornos Screw Machine Apprentice Machinist

Join a dynamic manufacturing team in Kentwood, MI and launch your career through our Screw Machine Academy, where you’ll learn on real Tornos equipment and master the fundamentals of precision machining.

What Your Early Weeks Look Like

You’ll start in our Tornos Training Academy, moving from fundamentals to hands-on operations. Expect instructor-led demos, shadowing, and guided practice as you build skill and confidence.

Training You’ll Master
  • Understanding core components and operating principles of Tornos screw machines
  • Using controls confidently and performing basic preventive maintenance
  • Preparing bar stock and keeping materials restocked
  • Troubleshooting to find the root cause of quality defects
  • Changing tools and dialing in slides for accurate cuts
  • Applying shaving techniques, roller supports, and floating holders
  • Maintaining collets and pushers; replacing cutoff tools correctly
  • Adjusting pickoff and cutoff operations for clean part transfer
Schedule & Path
  • Begin with 4–6 weeks of day-shift training
  • Transition to nights: 8:00 PM–6:00 AM, approximately 50 hours per week
What You Bring
  • High school diploma or GED; technical coursework or machining certification is a plus
  • Ability to pass an on-site mechanical aptitude test
  • Keen attention to detail and a drive for high-quality output
