Day-in-the-life: Build what heavy industry runs on
Express Employment Professionals is partnering with a manufacturing facility in Riverside, MO to hire a skilled Fitter/Welder who thrives on precision work and big builds. Picture your day: you open detailed engineering drawings, plan your cut list and sequence, prep edges by torch, bevel, and grind, then align and tack massive steel and stainless assemblies before laying down sound welds in flat, vertical, and overhead positions. You’ll keep distortion in check, move components with cranes and forklifts, and sign off your work to strict quality, safety, and productivity standards.
What you’ll take on
- Fabricate, fit, and weld large steel structures and stainless-steel machinery components to engineering drawings and weld maps
- Review work orders and fabrication documents to plan materials, tools, sequence, and weld process
- Perform torch cutting, beveling, and grinding to prepare joints
- Align and tack assemblies prior to final welding; weld in flat, vertical, and overhead positions
- Operate GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), and Flux-Cored Arc Welding equipment
- Control heat input and monitor for overheating, warping, distortion, and expansion
- Lay out, position, and secure parts using straightedges, squares, calipers, rulers, and tape measures
- Mark fit-up structures with correct weld joint identification before the welding sequence
- Perform pre-fit tasks such as filling gaps and building edges for accurate alignment
- Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and jib hoists to move materials
- Inspect materials/equipment and report defects; perform routine equipment maintenance
- Meet quality, safety, and productivity targets and communicate effectively with the team
- Handle additional fabrication-related duties as assigned
What you bring
- 5 years’ experience in GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG)
- 3–5 years of blueprint reading
- Solid knowledge of steel fabrication and fitting practices
- Hands-on skill with torch cutting, grinding, fitting, and tack welding
- Accurate tape measure use and strong manual dexterity
- Familiarity with shop equipment and material handling systems
- Willing to work overtime, including some weekends
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English
- Willingness to submit to background screening, drug screen, weld test, physical, and agility test
Physical demands & environment
- Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching
- Occasional work at heights
- Lift and/or move 60–70 pounds
- Close and color vision required
- Manufacturing setting with moderate to high noise
Tools & tech
TIG Welder (plus MIG and Flux-Cored processes), material handling equipment, precision layout tools.
