Shoe Maker information

What does a shoe maker do?

A shoe maker, also known as a cobbler or cordwainer, is a skilled craftsperson who designs, makes, and repairs shoes and other types of footwear. They work with a variety of materials such as leather, rubber, and fabric to create custom shoes or fix worn-out pairs. In addition to crafting new footwear, shoe makers often replace soles, heels, and perform other repairs to extend the life of shoes. Their work requires attention to detail, manual dexterity, and knowledge of different shoe construction techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shoe maker?

To thrive as a Shoe Maker, you need strong craftsmanship, attention to detail, and proficiency in materials such as leather, along with basic design or shoemaking training. Familiarity with specialized tools like sewing machines, cutting tools, and pattern-making software is typical, and formal certifications from shoemaking schools can be beneficial. Creativity, patience, and problem-solving skills help shoe makers excel in custom projects and collaborations. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality, comfortable footwear that meets both functional and aesthetic standards.

What are some common challenges a shoe maker faces when working on custom footwear orders?

Shoe makers often encounter challenges such as sourcing high-quality materials that meet unique customer specifications and ensuring precise measurements for a perfect fit. Balancing traditional handcrafting techniques with modern technology can also be demanding, especially when customizing unique designs. Additionally, effective communication with clients is essential to manage expectations and deliver a product that aligns with their vision, which requires strong interpersonal and project management skills.

What is the difference between Shoe Maker vs Cobbler?

AspectShoe MakerCobbler
CredentialsTypically no formal certification, but craftsmanship skills are essentialOften no formal certification, focuses on repair skills
Work EnvironmentWorkshops or factories creating new shoesRepair shops or retail stores fixing shoes
Industry UsageManufacturing and custom shoe creationShoe repair and maintenance
Common Search IntentDesigning and making new shoesRepairing and restoring shoes

While both Shoe Makers and Cobblers work with footwear, Shoe Makers focus on designing and creating new shoes, often in manufacturing settings. Cobblers primarily repair and restore existing shoes, working in repair shops. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and interests in the footwear industry.

How do you become a shoe maker?

To become a shoe maker, you typically need to learn the craft through vocational training, apprenticeships, or technical schools that teach leatherworking, pattern making, and sewing skills. Gaining experience with hand tools and shoe manufacturing equipment is essential, and some may pursue certifications in shoemaking or related trades to improve employment prospects.

How much does a shoe maker make?

Shoe makers typically earn between $25,000 and $45,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Skilled artisans with specialized tools or working in high-end shops may earn higher wages, and some may work part-time or freelance. Compensation can also include benefits such as health insurance and paid time off.

Job description

The Systems Engineer is the connective tissue between Allied Maker's teams and the tools they rely on: NetSuite, Autodesk Fusion, Wrike, the custom WMS, and the integrations that tie them together. This role goes beyond administration. The Systems Engineer is an integrator of design, planning, and operations, someone who understands how a fixture flows from design through shipping and builds systems that make that flow faster, cleaner, and more measurable. They refine workflows, build automations, and help leadership see team targets clearly.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Administration

  • Own day-to-day administration of NetSuite (items, BOMs, work orders, inventory, POs, reports, saved searches, roles), Autodesk Fusion / Fusion Manage, and Wrike
  • Maintain user access, permissions, and licenses across platforms; manage onboarding/offboarding
  • Ensure the custom WMS remains well-integrated with NetSuite and reflects physical operations accurately

Integration & Automation

  • Build and maintain integrations between NetSuite, Fusion, Wrike, and the custom WMS
  • Design automations (SuiteFlow/SuiteScript, Wrike automations, webhooks, scheduled jobs) to reduce manual handoffs
  • Partner with Design, Manufacturing, and Operations to identify high-impact automation opportunities

Workflow Design & Team Targets

  • Translate real-world workflow (design engineering vendor receiving finishing assembly ship) into system workflows and stage gates
  • Build dashboards and reports that surface team targets, lead times, and bottlenecks
  • Partner with department leads to refine status fields, definitions of done, and handoff protocols

Reliability & Change Management

  • Document system configurations and changes; manage release processes for customizations
  • Train teams on workflows and provide Tier-2 support for system issues
  • Evaluate and implement new tools, modules, or integrations

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3-5 years of experience administering and extending NetSuite in a manufacturing or inventory-driven environment
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Fusion / Fusion Manage and Wrike (or similar tools)
  • Proven ability to design workflows and build automations
  • Familiarity with SQL, SuiteScript, or similar scripting tools
  • Strong communication skills and ability to translate operational needs into system solutions

Preferred Qualifications
  • NetSuite SuiteScript 2.x or Administrator certification
  • Experience integrating a custom WMS with NetSuite
  • Experience with iPaaS tools (Celigo, Workato, Boomi, Zapier)
  • Background in manufacturing or make-to-order environments
  • Experience with BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Power BI)

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $100,000 - $130,000 annually (based on experience)
  • Discretionary bonus
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • PTO, holidays, parental leave
  • Employer-paid life and disability insurance
  • Employee assistance program
  • Safety shoe and eyewear allowance
  • Employee discount on Allied Maker products

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • On-site at the Glen Cove workshop
  • Primarily office-based with frequent time on the shop floor
  • Requires seated computer work with occasional light lifting
