Job description

Toole Design is looking for a Project Civil Engineer to join our growing team in Silver Spring, MD. We're seeking someone eager to grow and work on meaningful transportation projects that reflect our mission and values, someone ready for more responsibility who will take ownership, and guide design efforts.
What You'll Do As a Project Engineer at Toole Design, the projects you design will be built. You'll apply your civil engineering expertise to deliver multimodal transportation solutions across a wide range of contexts, from urban roadway reconstructions and streetscapes to signature trail projects that enhance suburban and rural environments.
In this role, you will:
  • Contribute to the design of transportation infrastructure projects
  • Develop construction documents, details, cost estimates, specifications, and concept plans
  • Use tools like MicroStation OpenRoads for production work
  • Collaborate with colleagues and clients to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Mentor junior staff and support a culture of technical excellence

What You Bring
  • P.E. license (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • 5+ years of experience developing roadway/highway construction documents
  • Strong background in civil engineering (roadway and geometric design, 3D modeling, accessible design)
  • Experience with signing and pavement marking, including MUTCD standards, as well as familiarity with PROWAG requirements
  • Proficiency in MicroStation OpenRoads
  • Experience with permitting, agency coordination, construction documentation, and cost estimating

Bonus Skills
  • Experience with multimodal transportation projects and multidisciplinary coordination (utilities, ROW, signals, etc.)
  • Familiarity with local agencies such as MDOT SHA, VDOT, or DDOT
