Tolling System Development information

What is tolling system development?

Tolling system development involves designing, creating, and maintaining electronic systems that collect tolls on roads, bridges, or tunnels. These systems use technologies like RFID, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), and electronic payment processing to automate toll collection, improve traffic flow, and reduce operational costs. Professionals in this field work on both the hardware and software aspects, ensuring interoperability, security, and compliance with regulations. They may also integrate with traffic management and analytics platforms to provide real-time data and reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tolling system developer?

To thrive as a Tolling System Developer, you need strong software engineering skills, experience with real-time systems, and a background in transportation or traffic management technology. Familiarity with tools and technologies like RFID, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), back-end databases, and industry standards such as ISO 18000 is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and addressing complex system requirements. These competencies ensure reliable, secure, and scalable tolling solutions that meet operational and regulatory demands.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in tolling system development?

Professionals in tolling system development often encounter challenges such as integrating complex hardware and software components, ensuring data accuracy for billing, and maintaining system reliability under high traffic volumes. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including civil engineers, IT security specialists, and customer service representatives—is essential to address technical and operational issues quickly. Staying updated with evolving technologies and regulatory requirements is also crucial, as tolling systems frequently incorporate new payment methods and compliance standards.

What is the difference between Tolling System Development vs Tolling System Testing?

Qualcomm Government Technologies (QGov) is focused on transforming U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Government capabilities by leveraging Qualcomm's world-class commercial wireless, cellular, and connectivity platforms. QGov works directly with DoD customers and across the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) ecosystem-including large systems integrators, OEMs, ISVs, and non-traditional defense partners-to adapt and deploy advanced commercial technologies at scale and at commercial pace in support of national security missions.
The Senior Manager, Business Development - USAF/USSF will be a senior individual contributor responsible for identifying, shaping, and capturing new business opportunities within the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Space Force and related defense agencies. This role requires deep familiarity with Air Force acquisition processes, strong technical fluency in cellular communications and tactical radio systems, and the ability to bridge operational military needs with advanced commercial technology solutions.
The ideal candidate is mission-driven, technically credible, and comfortable operating at the intersection of government customers, engineering teams, and industry partners.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead business development activities across assigned USAF/USSF accounts and defense ecosystem partners, with emphasis on opportunity identification, capture strategy, and customer engagement.
  • Develop and execute business acquisition strategies aligned with DoD requirements, programs of record, and emerging operational needs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with U.S. Government customers, program offices, and Defense Industrial Base partners.
  • Translate military and government operational requirements into viable technical and commercial solutions leveraging Qualcomm technologies.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product management, customer engineering, contracts, and finance to shape proposals, statements of work, and capture plans.
  • Support customer demonstrations, technical evaluations, pilots, and proof-of-concept activities related to cellular communications and defense tactical radio applications.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and government priorities to inform strategic planning and pipeline development.
  • Represent QGov at relevant government, defense, and industry forums as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (engineering, computer science, physics, or related field) or equivalent technical work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in Air Force acquisition, including familiarity with DoD procurement processes, contracting mechanisms, and customer engagement models.
  • Proven experience working with or supporting cellular communications technologies and defense tactical radio systems.
  • Ability to engage credibly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including government customers and internal engineering teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience supporting proposals, briefings, and customer presentations.
  • U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred / Strongly Desired Qualifications
  • MBA or advanced business degree strongly desired.
  • Prior military service (active duty or reserve) strongly desired, with understanding of operational and mission-level requirements.
  • Experience working within or alongside the Defense Industrial Base (DIB), including system integrators, OEMs, or government laboratories.
  • Familiarity with DoD communications, networking, or C5ISR-related programs and mission areas.
  • TS/SCI Clearance within the last 24 months

Ideal Candidate Traits
  • Mission-oriented and motivated by supporting national defense and warfighter outcomes.
  • Technically curious with the ability to quickly understand complex systems and architectures.
  • Self-starter who can operate independently while collaborating effectively in a matrixed organization.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and influencing without authority.
