TOLL COLLECTOR


PAY PLAN: 106 - $ 29,926.00 minimum salary


Locations- Veterans Bridge, Gateway Bridge, & Los Indios Bridge


Purpose of Classification

Performs clerical work in support of assigned bridge, accounting programs or financial function. Duties include collecting payments, processing of cash receipts and entering data into automated financial systems. Positions in this class perform routine account reconciliation and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer accounting questions; and maintain accounting documents and records.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.


Collects toll fee for motor vehicles and pedestrians crossing into Mexico; classifies vehicles according to toll classification and collects appropriate toll amounts from vehicular traffic crossing the Cameron County International Bridges between Mexico and the United States.


Utilizes computerized toll recording equipment for collections; greets customers utilizing Cameron County International Toll Bridges in a friendly, courteous and polite manner


Counts cash received during tour of duty to which assigned and prepares and submits to cashier cash collected and a report of cash receipts for that station during that tour of duty.


Performs work on an assigned, rotating shift basis and may be called upon to work a different or additional shift in the event of another toll collector's absence.


Performs security guard duties by providing security for personnel and building facilities of the County's International Bridge System.


Performs vault cashier duties by assisting the vault personnel with coin and cash counts.


Directs and coordinates traffic approaching the Toll Booth area.


Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding assigned bridge functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to bridge policies and activities. Explains policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience performing cash handling and/or fiscal control work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.


Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. Must submit to a Civil Service Toll Collector's Exam.
