What is a tobacco picker?

Tobacco pickers are agricultural workers responsible for harvesting tobacco leaves from fields. Their main duties typically include identifying ripe tobacco leaves, carefully picking them by hand, and preparing them for curing and processing. The work is physically demanding and usually takes place during the tobacco harvesting season, often in hot and humid conditions. Tobacco pickers play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and quantity of the harvested crop, which is essential for tobacco production.

What challenges do tobacco pickers face during the harvest season?

Tobacco pickers often face physically demanding work, especially during peak harvest season when long hours in hot, humid conditions are typical. The repetitive nature of the job, including bending, lifting, and carrying heavy leaves, can lead to fatigue and muscle strain. Additionally, exposure to nicotine through skin contact with wet tobacco leaves (a condition known as green tobacco sickness) is a unique occupational hazard. Staying hydrated, wearing protective clothing, and taking regular breaks are important practices to manage these challenges effectively.
