What is a tilt operator?

A Tilt operator typically works in the construction or manufacturing industry and is responsible for operating tilt-up concrete panels or tilt machines. Their main duties include safely moving, positioning, and securing large concrete panels or structures using specialized equipment. Tilt operators must follow strict safety procedures, read blueprints or plans, and collaborate with other construction team members to ensure projects are completed efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tilt operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tilt Operator, you need proficiency in operating heavy machinery, a valid operator’s license, and understanding of safety regulations. Familiarity with hydraulic systems, control panels, and maintenance procedures is typically required. Attention to detail, communication, and strong problem-solving skills help operators work efficiently and safely within a team environment. These competencies ensure the safe handling of equipment, minimize downtime, and contribute to overall workplace safety and productivity.

What are some common challenges faced by tilt-up construction supervisors on large-scale projects?

Tilt-Up Construction Supervisors often encounter challenges such as coordinating the seamless delivery and placement of large concrete panels, ensuring strict adherence to tight project timelines, and navigating unpredictable weather conditions that can affect curing and lifting schedules. Effective communication with subcontractors, safety teams, and crane operators is essential to prevent delays and maintain a safe worksite. Additionally, supervisors must be proactive in troubleshooting on-site issues and adapting to evolving project requirements to ensure successful project completion.

What is the difference between Tilt vs Crane Operator?

While both Tilt operators and Crane Operators work in construction and industrial environments, Tilt operators focus on operating tilt equipment for specific lifting and tilting tasks, often requiring specialized certification. Crane Operators handle large cranes for heavy lifting, requiring licensing and broader operational skills. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

Superintendent

Construction Superintendent (Industrial / Tilt-Wall / Precast / Warehouses)
Position Overview
Experienced Construction Superintendent to lead on-site execution of industrial and warehouse projects, specializing in tilt-wall and precast construction methods. The role focuses on delivering safe, ontime, onbudget projects by supervising field crews and subcontractors, coordinating trades, enforcing quality and safety standards, and communicating with project management and clients.
Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily on-site construction activities for industrial, tilt-wall, precast, and warehouse projects to ensure work progresses according to schedule and specifications.
  • Manage and supervise subcontractors, craft labor, and site personnel; assign tasks, monitor productivity, and resolve field issues promptly.
  • Implement and enforce site safety programs and OSHA requirements; conduct toolbox talks, safety inspections, and ensure all personnel have proper training and PPE.
  • Coordinate layout, staging, and sequencing for tilt-wall panels, precast components, foundations, slabs, and associated trades to optimize workflow and minimize rework.
  • Read and interpret drawings, specifications, and as-built conditions; verify dimensions, elevations, and tolerances in the field.
  • Maintain project schedules and update short-interval lookahead plans; work with project manager and scheduler to identify critical path activities and recover time when necessary.
  • Track materials, equipment, and manpower needs; coordinate deliveries, on-site storage, and vendor/precast manufacturer schedules to prevent delays.
  • Inspect workmanship and quality of installed systems; document non-conformances and direct corrective actions to meet project standards and owner expectations.
  • Prepare daily reports, site diaries, labor and equipment logs, and progress photos; communicate status, risks, and mitigation plans to project leadership and owners.
  • Manage change orders in the field by documenting scope impacts, collecting supporting information, and coordinating pricing with project management.
  • Facilitate inspections with third parties, municipalities, and owners; ensure timely resolution of punchlist items and project closeout requirements.
  • Mentor and develop foremen and field staff, promoting a collaborative culture focused on productivity, safety, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of field superintendent or lead foreman experience on industrial, commercial, or warehouse construction projects; hands-on experience with tilt-wall and precast systems strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record supervising large crews and multiple subcontractors on fast-paced, heavy-civil or building projects.
  • Strong knowledge of concrete construction, formwork, shoring, hoisting/rigging for tilt-wall panels, precast erection, slab-on-grade, and related sitework.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and layout controls; familiarity with as-built documentation and tolerance verification.
  • Proficiency with construction scheduling and documentation tools (MS Project, Primavera P6, Procore, PlanGrid, or similar) and MS Office suite.
  • OSHA 30-hour construction certification or equivalent; first aid/CPR and other safety credentials preferred.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate among owners, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage time-sensitive priorities under pressure.
  • Valid drivers license and reliable transportation; willingness to travel between job sites as required.
  • Degree or diploma in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field is a plus; NCCER, CM, or superintendent certification is advantageous.
