What is tile design?

Tile design refers to the process of creating decorative or functional patterns, layouts, and motifs using tiles for surfaces like floors, walls, and backsplashes. Tile designers select materials, colors, shapes, and arrangements to achieve both aesthetic appeal and practical durability in residential, commercial, or public spaces. Their work often involves collaborating with architects, interior designers, and clients to ensure the tiles complement the overall design vision. Tile design also includes staying informed about current trends, materials, and installation techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tile designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tile Designer, you need a strong background in art or design, attention to detail, and proficiency in creating patterns and layouts, often supported by a degree in interior design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite is typically required, along with an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. Creativity, strong communication, and collaboration skills help Tile Designers stand out when working with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the creation of aesthetically pleasing, functional, and feasible tile designs that meet client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges tile designers face when working on custom residential or commercial projects?

Tile designers often encounter challenges such as balancing client preferences with functional and budgetary constraints, ensuring the chosen materials are suitable for the intended environment, and coordinating with contractors or architects for seamless installation. Additionally, they may need to stay updated on design trends and source unique materials, all while meeting project deadlines. Effective communication and adaptability are key skills for overcoming these challenges and delivering successful results.

What is the difference between Tile Design vs Tile Installer?

Tile Design professionals focus on creating visual layouts and patterns for tiles, often working in design studios or client meetings. In contrast, Tile Installers execute the physical installation of tiles on-site, ensuring proper placement and durability. Both roles are essential in the tile industry but serve different functions in the project lifecycle.

How much do tile designers make?

Tile designers typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Senior or specialized tile designers may earn higher salaries, especially if they work in design firms or have advanced certifications. Compensation can also include benefits such as health insurance and paid time off.

How to become a tile designer?

To become a tile designer, develop skills in graphic design, pattern creation, and an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. A relevant degree in design, architecture, or fine arts can be helpful, along with proficiency in design software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Gaining experience through internships or a portfolio of tile designs is also important for entry into the field.

Job description

Warranty & Home Services Manager

Sun Design Remodeling Specialists is seeking a highly skilled, client-focused Warranty & Home Services Manager to lead and grow our post-construction service division.

Sun Design, an architectural design-build remodeler, has been transforming homes in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC area since 1988. Sun's sparkling reputation has been built on reinventing homes through the creative use of light and space, working closely with clients, with minimal impact on busy lives. Our ultimate goal is to create spaces that are not only award-winning in their beauty, but that dramatically enhance the quality of life today and in the years to come.

Job Description

This is not a typical handyman position.

We're looking for a professional who can confidently meet with homeowners, diagnose issues, create solutions, sell and price home maintenance projects, coordinate resources, and deliver an exceptional client experience.

You'll oversee our warranty program while growing our Forever Home Care service division through ongoing maintenance services, seasonal maintenance agreements, and small improvement projects for our past clients.

If you're equal parts craftsman, salesperson, problem solver, and relationship builder, we'd like to meet you.

What You'll Do

As the Warranty & Home Services Manager, you'll be the face of Sun Design for many of our past clients.

You'll help homeowners protect and maintain their investment while identifying opportunities to provide additional services that improve their homes and lives.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing warranty requests and ensuring timely resolution
  • Meeting with homeowners to assess concerns and recommend solutions
  • Selling and pricing Forever Home Care projects
  • Growing recurring revenue through seasonal maintenance agreements
  • Building long-term relationships with Sun Design clients
  • Developing scopes of work and preparing proposals
  • Ordering materials and coordinating subcontractors
  • Supervising and mentoring a Home Services Technician
  • Identifying future remodeling opportunities and referring them to our sales team
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and project records
  • Ensuring every client receives exceptional experience

This Role Is Part Service Manager, Part Sales Consultant

Success in this position requires someone who is comfortable discussing money, setting expectations, and asking for the sale.

You should be able to:

  • Listen carefully to homeowner concerns
  • Diagnose underlying issues
  • Recommend practical solutions
  • Explain pricing confidently
  • Gain clients buy-in
  • Close small service projects
  • Follow up consistently

You don't need to be a high-pressure salesperson.

You do need to be comfortable having honest conversations, presenting value, and helping clients make decisions.

What Makes Someone Successful Here?

You might be a great fit if people describe you as:

  • Dependable
  • Organized
  • Professional
  • Resourceful
  • Self-motivated
  • Trustworthy
  • Tech-savvy
  • Detail-oriented
  • A strong communicator
  • Someone who follows through

You don't need constant supervision.

You know how to prioritize your day, communicate proactively, and keep commitments.

While you'll have a dedicated coordinator helping schedule appointments, and support administrative tasks, you'll be expected to take ownership of your workload and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

Technical Skills

Strong experience in several of the following:

  • Finish carpentry
  • Drywall repair
  • Painting and touch-up work
  • Doors and hardware
  • Cabinet adjustments and repairs
  • Basic plumbing
  • Basic electrical
  • Tile and flooring repairs
  • Exterior repairs
  • General residential troubleshooting

You don't need to know everything.

You do need to know how houses work and how to determine the best path forward.

Technology & Business Skills

You should be comfortable using:

  • Outlook and Microsoft 365
  • Tablets and smartphones in the field
  • Scheduling and project management software
  • Digital documentation and photos
  • Email and client communication systems
  • Basic estimating and pricing tools

Experience with service management, estimating, or small-project sales is highly desirable.

Why Join Sun Design?

For over 35 years, Sun Design has built a reputation for exceptional remodeling and lifelong client relationships.

We believe our relationship with a client shouldn't end when construction is complete.

Our Forever Home Care program helps homeowners maintain and improve their homes for years after their remodeling project is finished.

This role offers the opportunity to:

  • Build and grow a service business
  • Develop recurring maintenance programs
  • Work independently with strong support
  • Lead a technician
  • Create lasting client relationships
  • Be part of an award-winning team and culture

The Ideal Candidate:

An experienced Lead Carpenter, Service Manager, Punch-Out Manager, Residential Superintendent, Facilities Manager, or former small-business owner who enjoys solving problems, helping people, and building something bigger than themselves.

Someone who can walk into a home, earn trust, identify solutions, create a plan, and leave with a happy client and a signed proposal.
