JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for someone who has a passion for baking and takes pride in creating high-quality, from-scratch products. This position is an excellent opportunity for an experienced home baker, culinary student, pastry professional, or cake decorator looking to expand their skills in a professional scratch kitchen.

In this role, you will prepare a variety of from-scratch desserts, breads, sauces, dressings, and other recipes while working closely with the Kitchen Manager to ensure consistency and quality. The ideal candidate has a flexible schedule, is self-motivated, task-oriented, and enjoys working as part of a collaborative culinary team.

While your primary focus will be bakery production, this position also offers exciting opportunities for cross-training in other areas of the kitchen, including BBQ production and Banquet Event Orders (BEOs). For individuals who are eager to grow professionally, this role provides the chance to develop new culinary techniques, broaden your skill set, and gain experience in multiple facets of a high-volume, scratch-made kitchen. We value promoting from within whenever possible and encourage team members who are passionate about learning, advancing their careers, and taking on new challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare a wide variety of from-scratch items following traditional and modern recipes.

  • Follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner.

  • Inform the Kitchen Manager of production needs, ordering requirements, and inventory concerns.

  • Monitor and maintain par levels for ingredients such as flour, sugar, butter, and other baking essentials.

  • Check the quality of ingredients and ensure equipment is properly maintained and functioning.

  • Maintain a clean, organized workstation while adhering to all food safety and sanitation standards.

  • Assist with additional kitchen production as needed to support overall team success.

Requirements
  • Must obtain a Boone County Food Handler's Card.

  • Previous experience as a Pastry Cook, Baker, Cake Decorator, or similar role preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with the kitchen team.

  • Willingness to continue learning and expanding professional culinary skills.

  • Knowledge of sanitation principles, baking techniques, food preparation, and nutrition.

  • Flexible schedule and willingness to assist in other kitchen areas when needed.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to provide documentation for Form I-9 to verify identity and employment authorization.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and/or drug screening.
  • Must have a bank account for direct deposit.
  • Must be 21 and over.
  • Must obtain a Boone County Food Handler's Card.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Glenn's Cafe values its employees and recognizes the importance of providing comprehensive benefits. Offering insurance benefits from day one is a benefit that we provide to all our employees. We also know that insurance is an expense, and because of this, we pay our employees premiums as well.

By providing these benefits, Glenn's Cafe is not only supporting the health and well-being of its employees but also investing in their future success.

Glenn's Café

From sometime around 1939, a small gas station diner on the side of what was then Highway 40 (today’s Business Loop) held the name Glenn’s Café. Originally opened by Glenn Purdy and his wife, Tilley, it enjoyed a 40+ year run at that location. Starting as little more than a diner, it eventually graduated to more substantial offerings. For generations, Glenn’s café, with its iconic sign, became a favorite stop for weary travelers and local families alike.

In 1988, the café and its sign were brought to downtown Columbia at 9th and Cherry. There, the café gained a heavy dose of New Orleans influence. In 2002, Glenn’s closed its doors, leaving many to wonder if they had seen the last of it. After a brief stint from 2006 to 2013 at Hotel Frederick in Boonville, MO, Glenn’s Café moved back to downtown Columbia, bringing along its beloved original sign.

Glenn’s Café is now joined with The Tiger Hotel, the only 4 diamond hotel in Columbia. Built in 1928 by Simon Construction Company, The Tiger Hotel was the most lavish in Columbia, with modern amenities seen nowhere else. Designed by Alonzo Gentry, a member of the Statler Hotel architectural team, it was the first skyscraper between Kansas City and St. Louis. The Tiger sign on the roof became and is to this day one of the most notable landmarks in Columbia. In 1979, The Tiger Hotel was nominated for the National Registry of Historic Places and was named one of the top ten most notable places in Boone County in 2000.
