How much can a TIG welder get paid?

TIG welders typically earn between $20 and $40 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $80,000 depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled welders with certifications and specialized tools can command higher wages, especially in manufacturing, aerospace, or construction environments.

How to make $100,000 a year as a welder?

To earn $100,000 annually as a welder, professionals typically need extensive experience, advanced skills such as TIG welding, and certifications like AWS. Working in high-paying industries such as oil and gas, aerospace, or construction, often with overtime or specialized projects, can also increase earnings significantly.

Is TIG welding a good career?

TIG welding is a skilled trade with steady demand in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and construction. It requires technical training, certifications, and attention to safety, offering opportunities for advancement and good earning potential for experienced welders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a TIG Welder, you need proficiency in welding techniques, strong attention to detail, and a relevant certification such as AWS TIG welding credentials. Familiarity with TIG welding machines, blueprint reading, and safety protocols is essential. Excellent hand-eye coordination, patience, and problem-solving abilities are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure precise, high-quality welds and safety in demanding manufacturing or fabrication environments.

What are some common challenges TIG welders face on the job, and how can they be addressed?

TIG welders often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision during intricate welds, managing heat control to prevent warping, and ensuring consistent quality in various positions or materials. Addressing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, steady hand-eye coordination, and ongoing practice with different metals and thicknesses. Collaborating with experienced team members and staying updated on the latest welding techniques can also help overcome these obstacles and improve work quality.

What are TIG welders?

TIG welders are skilled tradespeople who use Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding to join metal components with precision and strength. This welding process uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and an inert gas, typically argon, to protect the weld area from contamination. TIG welders are often employed in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing where high-quality, clean welds are essential. They must have excellent hand-eye coordination, technical knowledge of different metals, and an understanding of safety procedures. TIG welding is valued for its accuracy and ability to produce strong, visually appealing welds.

What is the difference between Tig vs MIG Welder?

AspectTig WelderMIG Welder
CertificationsTypically requires AWS certification, specialized trainingOften requires basic welding certifications, less specialized
Work EnvironmentPrecise, often in aerospace, automotive, or artistic fabricationHigh-volume manufacturing, construction, automotive repair
Welding ProcessUses tungsten electrode and inert gas for precise, clean weldsUses wire feed and inert or semi-inert gas for faster, bulk welding
Common UsesFine, detailed work, thin materials, specialty projectsHeavy-duty, large-scale welding, thicker materials

In summary, Tig welders focus on precision and detailed work with specialized equipment, often requiring specific certifications. MIG welders are suited for faster, high-volume tasks with different equipment and certifications. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and construction industries but serve different project needs.

Does TIG pay the most?

TIG welding is a skilled trade that often offers higher pay compared to other welding methods due to its precision and complexity. However, pay rates vary based on experience, location, industry, and certifications, and some specialized or high-demand welding roles may offer higher compensation. Overall, TIG welders tend to earn competitive wages within the welding profession.

Job Title: TIG Welder

Job Description

This role focuses on custom job shop welding, with approximately 70% of the work involving TIG welding and 30% involving MIG welding. You will perform high-quality welds on a wide range of custom sheet metal products, working from detailed blueprints and contributing to precision fabrication projects across multiple industries.

Responsibilities

  • Perform TIG welding on a variety of custom sheet metal components, with a strong emphasis on stainless steel, aluminum, and low carbon steel.
  • Perform MIG and pulse MIG welding as needed, supporting a mix of TIG and MIG work based on current projects.
  • Read, understand, and interpret complex custom blueprints and welding symbols to complete jobs accurately.
  • Carry out fit-up welding, including aligning, clamping, and preparing parts for final welding.
  • Work on projects ranging from small custom computer cabinets to large custom frames for industrial applications, including the oil industry.
  • Adjust welding techniques and parameters to accommodate metal thicknesses ranging from 3/32 inch to 1/2 inch.
  • Use pedal TIG welding equipment effectively to produce clean, precise welds.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality and craftsmanship on all custom, non-production welds.
  • Collaborate with team members in fabrication and machining to ensure parts meet design specifications and customer requirements.
  • Follow safety procedures and best practices while operating welding equipment and handling materials.
  • Inspect completed welds for accuracy, structural integrity, and adherence to project requirements, making corrections as needed.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of TIG and MIG welding experience, preferably with a stronger experience in TIG welding.
  • Proficiency in TIG welding, including pedal TIG techniques, on aluminum, low carbon steel, and various stainless steels.
  • Proficiency in MIG and pulse MIG welding on sheet metal and structural components.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex custom blueprints and fabrication drawings.
  • Experience with fit-up welding, including preparing and aligning components for final welds.
  • Ability to work with metal thicknesses ranging from 3/32 inch to 1/2 inch.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality custom welds.
  • Ability to adapt to a job shop environment with frequently changing projects and requirements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical school degree or diploma in welding, which can support success in weld testing and evaluation.
  • Experience working in a custom, non-production welding environment.
  • Working in a sheet metal fabrication, precision metal fabrication, or structural fabrication.
  • Familiarity with working on a variety of products, such as custom cabinets and large industrial frames.
  • Comfort working in a full-service metal manufacturing environment that includes prototyping, short-run and long-run production, and precision machining.
  • Strong communication skills to support collaboration and open communication with team members and other departments.

Why Work Here?

You will join a full-service metal manufacturing organization that values open communication, fair and honest practices, and customer-focused solutions. The company offers strong opportunities for growth, including frequent raises and clear paths to advance into lead roles or other areas of the business. You can benefit from good benefits and the option to work four 10-hour days, supporting work-life balance. The culture emphasizes best-cost manufacturing, innovative engineering, and close collaboration with customers, providing a dynamic environment where your skills and contributions are recognized and rewarded.

Work Environment

The work environment centers on a precision metal manufacturing facility that produces a wide variety of custom sheet metal products. All welding is custom rather than high-volume production, so each day brings different projects and unique challenges. You will work with advanced welding processes including TIG, pedal TIG, MIG, pulse MIG, and fit-up welding on materials such as aluminum, low carbon steel, and various stainless steels in thicknesses from 3/32 inch to 1/2 inch. The facility supports a full range of capabilities, including prototyping, short- and long-run production, precision metal fabrication, precision machining, structural fabrication, and complete assembly services. You will work with detailed custom blueprints and collaborate closely with a team of experienced metal fabricators and machinists. Scheduling can include the option to work four 10-hour shifts, providing flexibility while maintaining a professional, safety-conscious shop environment.
