Job description

The First-Class Stationary Engineer is located in Gaithersburg, MD and operates, monitors, maintains, and repairs industrial utility plant equipment that provides steam generation, chilled water production, compressed air, and electrical generation services. This position supports 24-hour operation of critical infrastructure systems while ensuring safe, efficient, and uninterrupted utility plant performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesย 

  • Operate andย monitorย high-pressure steam generation equipment and associated auxiliary systems.ย 
  • Maintain proper steam pressure, water levels, feedwater controls, and combustion efficiency.ย 
  • Conduct chemical testing, water treatment activities, and blowdown adjustmentsย requiredย toย maintainย system performance.ย 
  • Operate andย monitorย chilled water production systems, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and associated distribution equipment.ย 
  • Operate andย maintainย air compressors, air dryers, and compressed air distribution systems.ย 
  • Operate andย monitorย combined heat and power (CHP) or cogeneration equipment, including associated steam and electrical generation systems.ย 
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and corrective repairs on plant equipment.ย 
  • Troubleshoot and repair digital, pneumatic, and electrical control systems.ย 
  • Repair pumps, valves, piping systems, and related mechanical equipment.ย 
  • Monitor system alarms and respond to abnormal operating conditions and emergencies.ย 
  • Maintainย accurateย operating logs, maintenance records, inspection reports, and shift turnover documentation.ย 
  • Perform housekeeping duties toย maintainย safe and orderly work areas.ย 
  • Comply withย all safety requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and operational standards.ย 
  • Remain onsite during assigned shifts andย participateย in rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and approved overtime coverage asย required.ย

  • High-pressure steam boilers and associated feedwater systems.ย 
  • Centrifugal chillers and chilled water production systems.ย 
  • Cooling towers and condenser water systems.ย 
  • Air compressors and compressed air systems.ย 
  • Combined heat and power (CHP) / cogeneration equipment.ย 
  • Pumps, valves, heat exchangers, control systems, and ancillary utility plant equipment.ย 

Minimum Qualificationsย 

  • Current Maryland Grade 1 (First-Class Stationary Engineer) Licenseย required.ย 
  • Current EPA Universal CFC Certificationย required.ย 
  • Minimum two (2) years of independent operating experience as a First-Class Stationary Engineer on comparable industrial equipment.ย 
  • Experience with industrial boiler operations, central utility plant systems, chilled water production, and cogeneration systems.ย 
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system problems.ย 
  • Working knowledge of computerized control systems, pneumatic systems, and electrical controls.ย 
  • Ability to obtain andย maintainย all required site access credentials and security clearances.ย 
  • Ability to work rotating shifts in a 24/7 operating environment.ย
