What is a Therapy Reviewer?

A Therapy Reviewer is a professional who evaluates therapy treatment plans and clinical documentation, often on behalf of insurance companies or healthcare organizations. Their primary role is to ensure that therapy services provided to patients meet established guidelines, are medically necessary, and comply with coverage policies. Therapy Reviewers may review cases involving physical, occupational, or speech therapy, and collaborate with providers to support quality care while managing costs. They often have backgrounds in allied health professions and a strong understanding of clinical protocols.

How does a Therapy Reviewer typically collaborate with clinicians and healthcare teams to ensure quality patient care?

Therapy Reviewers work closely with clinicians, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to assess treatment plans and ensure they meet clinical guidelines and payer requirements. This collaboration often involves reviewing documentation, providing feedback to therapists, and occasionally participating in multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex cases. Effective communication and a thorough understanding of clinical standards are essential, as Therapy Reviewers play a key role in balancing patient needs with organizational and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Therapy Reviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Therapy Reviewer, you need a strong background in clinical therapy, healthcare regulations, and case management, typically supported by a degree in a behavioral health field and relevant licensure (such as LCSW, LPC, or LMFT). Familiarity with utilization review software, medical record systems, and standardized assessment tools is important for evaluating treatment plans. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for making sound clinical determinations and collaborating with providers. These skills ensure accurate, ethical, and efficient reviews that support quality patient care and compliance with payer requirements.

We are open to starting part-time (approximately 20–25 hours/week) with a structured pathway to full-time as caseload grows. Full-time interest is encouraged to apply. Active Virginia PTA License required.

  • Maintain timely documentation within required standards

  • Contribute to positive patient experience and retention

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary providers when appropriate

  • Exposure to PRI-based assessment and interdisciplinary collaboration

  • In-house mentorship and skill development

  • Opportunity to grow into advanced PTA roles within the practice

Who Thrives Here

  • PTA with outpatient ortho experience preferred

  • Clinician who values strong communication and team collaboration

  • Organized, dependable, and patient-centered

  • Interested in growing clinically — not staying static

  • Comfortable adapting within a busy but supportive environment
