What is an average server?

An average server in a restaurant is someone who takes orders, serves food and beverages, and ensures that guests have a pleasant dining experience. They typically handle multiple tables, answer questions about the menu, and process payments. While the exact duties can vary by establishment, servers are generally expected to provide good customer service, maintain cleanliness, and work efficiently as part of a team. The term 'average' usually refers to the typical performance or responsibilities expected from most servers in the industry. Servers often earn a base wage plus tips, with compensation depending on location and type of restaurant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a server, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Server, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities, and knowledge of food safety, typically gained through on-the-job training or food handler certification. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and order management tools is essential for efficient service. Exceptional communication, multitasking, and problem-solving skills help servers stand out in fast-paced environments. These skills ensure positive guest experiences, accurate order processing, and smooth teamwork, which are crucial for success in the hospitality industry.

What are some common challenges servers face during busy shifts, and how can they effectively manage them?

Servers often experience high-pressure situations during peak dining hours, such as handling multiple tables, balancing customer requests, and coordinating with kitchen staff. To manage these challenges, effective time management, clear communication, and staying organized are essential. Many servers find it helpful to prioritize tasks, work closely with teammates, and remain calm under pressure to ensure a positive guest experience and smooth workflow.

Position Classification

The position for which you are being considered is a part-time position, which, for purposes of the federal health reform law, satisfies federal standards. Under those federal standards, work is part-time if someone works 29 hours or less a week on average. This average is not calculated on a week-by-week basis. Instead, a measurement period, also known as a look back period, is used to determine the average hours an employee works per week. Work hours may fluctuate from time-to-time depending on business needs and how hours are scheduled. Simply because hours may increase from time-to-time does not mean the position ceases to be a part-time position; it does not mean the position is full-time for benefits or other purposes. Variation in hours is part of the job position and may be such that you work well over 30 hours per week for an extended time. All changes to full-time positions will be documented with a formal notice; in the absence of that designation by us, a change has not occurred.

Federal law states that an employer is to measure its employees’ hours worked to determine possible future health plan eligibility; therefore, if you are hired, we will track any hours worked over a 12-month period starting with the first day of the first month following the date of hire. If, at the end of the 12 months you are then determined to be eligible, you will be offered plan coverage at that time for the following 12 months. (Coverage is never available retroactively.)
