What is a textile designer?

As a textile designer, you create designs for different types of fabrics, including knit, woven, and printed, for a particular industry, such as fashion or furnishings. Your job duties include using computer design software to produce textile designs, meeting with suppliers and manufacturers of textile materials, and keeping up with industry trends. Producing quality textile designs for your employer and maintaining your own art and design portfolio are two of your main responsibilities.

What does a textile designer do?

A textile designer creates patterns and designs for fabrics used in clothing, home furnishings, and other products. Their work involves developing original designs, choosing colors and materials, and often working with digital tools or traditional methods like sketching and weaving. Textile designers collaborate with manufacturers to ensure their designs can be produced efficiently and meet quality standards. They also stay updated on trends to create appealing and marketable designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a textile designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Textile Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, color theory, and textile fabrication, often supported by a degree in textile or fashion design. Proficiency in CAD software like Adobe Illustrator or specialized textile design programs, as well as familiarity with printing and weaving technologies, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help designers translate ideas into market-ready products and collaborate with clients or manufacturers. These skills ensure innovative, high-quality textile designs that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements in a competitive industry.

How do textile designers typically collaborate with other departments during the product development process?

Textile Designers often work closely with product development, merchandising, and production teams to ensure their designs align with market trends and manufacturing capabilities. Regular meetings and feedback sessions are common, allowing designers to adjust patterns, colorways, and materials based on input from these departments. This collaboration ensures that the final textile products are both aesthetically appealing and feasible to produce at scale. Effective communication and adaptability are key for Textile Designers to succeed in this cross-functional environment.

What is the difference between Textile Designer vs Fashion Designer?

How much does a textile designer get paid?

The average salary for a textile designer in the United States ranges from $40,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer. Entry-level designers typically earn lower wages, while those with specialized skills or working in high-demand markets can earn higher salaries. Many textile designers also work freelance or in creative environments that may influence compensation.

Is textile design a good career?

Textile design is a creative profession that involves developing patterns and fabrics for fashion, home decor, and industrial use. It requires skills in drawing, computer-aided design (CAD), and knowledge of textiles and manufacturing processes. The field offers opportunities in fashion houses, design studios, and manufacturing companies, with job stability depending on industry demand and individual skill level.

Job description

WHO WE ARE
TWENTY2 is a high-end private label wallpaper and textile production company. We help artists and designers bring innovative wallpaper and textile collections and custom projects to life. We're known for our expertise, creativity, high level of customer service, exacting quality standards, and on-time delivery.
We're seeking an experienced Designer with strong textile print and pattern design skills to join our in-house creative team.
In this role, you'll take customer artwork and original concepts - patterns, murals, colorways - and turn them into production-ready products. You'll take particular ownership of strikeoff color development, interpreting customer direction and feedback to get color exactly right, while advising on aesthetic and material choices that our Projects Team relays to partners. You'll work with real autonomy, balancing hands-on creative work with technical precision, and you'll help mentor junior designers as part of a collaborative studio team.
What You'll Do
  • Take in customer artwork and original ideas and develop them into finished patterns, murals, and colorways - including specialty techniques like custom masking and pre-trim work
  • Build mockups, room renders, and presentation materials that bring a concept to life for internal review and client approval
  • Own the strikeoff color development process, interpreting customer direction and feedback to achieve accurate, approved color matches
  • Perform color edits and checks on customer orders to ensure precise alignment with approved standards
  • Monitor prepress swatches for color accuracy and print clarity, flagging any quality or equipment concerns to the Design Manager
  • Advise on aesthetic options, color matching, and ground selections that balance visual impact with what's manufacturable, with guidance relayed to partners through our Projects Team
  • Check incoming files for accuracy and production-readiness, catching issues before they become problems on the floor
  • Estimate project scope and turnaround time, and communicate clearly with the Projects Team throughout a project
  • Mentor and support Production Designers, and pitch in on hands-on production design work during busy periods
  • Stay current on design trends, new techniques, and industry developments, sharing relevant insights with the team

What We're Looking For
  • 3-4 years of experience in textile, wallpaper, or surface design (including at least 1-2 years in a more technical production/prepress role)
  • Strong Photoshop skills, including advanced masking and repeat pattern work; comfortable in Illustrator and InDesign
  • Experience with a Wacom tablet for detailed digital art and mask work
  • Solid understanding of color theory, print production, and how designs translate from screen to finished product
  • Confident communicator, comfortable guiding internal teams through technical decisions and incorporating feedback
  • A collaborative, mentoring mindset - you're as happy helping a production designer solve a problem as you are solving your own

Studies have shown that marginalized communities, such as women, LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC, are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. Don't meet all the requirements listed? Please apply anyway if this role excites you and you are eager to learn. At TWENTY2, passion, dedication, and curiosity are the most important factors for success. Please ask about on-the-job training opportunities when applying.
At TWENTY2, our culture is grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and purpose. We value open communication, cross-functional teamwork, and a commitment to continuous innovation. Our team is united by a dedication to reliability, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility, with a shared focus on making a meaningful impact for our partners and our community.
TWENTY2 revolves around creativity, so we value engaging employees who enhance our company culture. If you would like to identify your creative type check out the Adobe quiz at mycreativetype.com. We would love to hear about your results!
