DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The instructional Support Specialist - Fine Arts requires detailed knowledge of the fine arts subject matter applicate to the assignment and the ability to assist in providing instruction to others in an effective manner. The incumbent is responsible for the oversight and maintenance of the fine arts discipline laboratories which includes responsibility for maintaining an inventory of requirement materials, supplies, consumables; preparing and setting up equipment and materials for laboratory exercises; and responsibility for ensuring the safety and cleanliness of laboratory equipment and facilities. Key Duties & Responsibilities ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties are typical for this classification.

Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Essential responsibilities are designated by *. 1.

Supports instruction in the assigned discipline; prepares materials and equipment for laboratory sessions and activities; prepares for and assists with classroom lectures and demonstrations. * 2. Provides direction and laboratory instruction to students on darkroom, ceramics, painting, drawing, and printmaking procedures and techniques.

* 3. Assists and supports instructors and students as needed; provides direction to students during open laboratory and studio times; monitors and ensures students adhere to established laboratory procedures and safety requirements; implements all studio policies, procedures, and guidelines. * 4.

Oversees the activities of the assigned laboratory and/or studio during open lab hours in the absence of the instructor. * 5. Organizes and maintains labs, studios, and storage spaces to maximize space and safety, as needed.

* 6. Prepares and executes classroom printing projects, photography, design, and layout of instructional materials. * 7.

Monitors and maintains lab, classroom, and studio inventory of equipment and supplies; facilitates the equipment loan program and check out processes for approved equipment and supplies. * 8. Takes department inventory; tracks and monitors chemical and supply inventory for labs, classroom, and instructional needs; orders chemicals, materials, and supplies when needed; works with IT and other departments to facilitate equipment repairs.

* 9. Operates and maintains darkroom equipment and supplies; maintains cleanliness of darkroom; mixes and prepares chemicals needed for lab assignments. * 10.

Arranges for safe storage and disposal of chemicals; ensures disposal of laboratory chemicals is done according to licensed and established waste management processes and procedures. * 11. Coordinates, plans, schedules, and performs dark room photography activities.

* 12. Loads and fires electric and gas kilns; assists with and arranges for maintenance or repair of ceramic and kiln equipment. * 13.

Operates and supervises the use of power tools for projects and instructional assignments. * 14. Transports students and/or artwork to and from artists' studios and gallery shows; assists students with art exhibit construction.

* 15. Coordinates and facilitates art exhibits; assists with the display of gallery artwork and shows, including but not limited to scheduling press and promotional activities related to scheduled showings. * 16.

Maintains and performs minor cosmetic repairs to the college's art gallery. * 17. Performs a wide variety of specialized computer, desktop publishing, and graphics for Art Gallery publicity.

* 18. Determines and recommends purchases for fine arts department, tracks and monitors the fine arts department budgets; works with dean, business office, and other departments to ensure budget expenditures and allocations are submitted through the established budget approval process; processes a variety of accounting activities including but not limited to processing requisitions, purchase order requests, payment requests, and Cal Card statements. * 19.

Receives, reviews, and verifies vendor paperwork for accuracy, completeness, and compliance; assists in the set-up of new vendors. * 20. Hires, trains, supervises, and provides work direction to student assistants, student workers, and short-term, temporary staff; may guide and direct the part-time staff assigned to the fine arts department and coordinates activities to support instructional goals; reviews updates, maintains, and files student employee records.

* 21. Provides input into the assigned area of assignment, program review, and participates in the planning process in developing goals within the assigned area. * 22.

Updates and maintains accurate records, files, file sharing, and filing systems. * 23. May participate in and serve on a variety of college and/or department meetings or committees.

Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate Degree with coursework in Fine Arts or related discipline; AND Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience providing instructional support; OR Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Experience working with chemicals used in a fine arts program or discipline. Material Safety Data Sheets or Global Harmonizing Certification.

Demonstrated commitment to community college education.
