The Thermo Lab Technician at Nortek Data Center Cooling (DCC) supports the safe, efficient, and disciplined operation of the Shakopee Thermal Lab. This role is hands-on and equipment-focused, responsible for assisting with equipment changeouts, preparing test setups, connecting units to power and water, and supporting the Lab Leader in daily operational activities. The technician ensures that testing environments are prepared correctly, equipment is handled safely, and lab workflows run smoothly to meet engineering and customer timelines.
Key Responsibilities
  • Equipment Changeouts - Assist with removing, installing, staging, and positioning test units and components in the thermal lab.
  • Utility Hookups - Support safe and proper connection of equipment to electrical power, water, condensate, and other utilities required for testing.
  • Test Setup Support - Help prepare test stands, sensors, hoses, cables, and instrumentation under direction of the Lab Leader or engineering.
  • Daily Lab Operations - Assist with cleaning, organizing, staging equipment, maintaining tools, and ensuring the lab remains inspection-ready.
  • Safety & Compliance - Follow all Nortek DCC safety procedures, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout practices, and hazard-control protocols.
  • Documentation Support - Record basic setup notes, equipment changes, and observations to support traceability and engineering documentation.
  • Equipment Readiness - Assist with basic checks of lab equipment, hoses, fittings, and tools to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Cross-Functional Support - Work with engineering, service, and operations teams to support test execution and lab scheduling needs.

Qualifications
Required
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools, equipment, and utility hookups.
  • Ability to lift, move, and position equipment safely using proper techniques and lab tools.
  • Basic understanding of electrical and water connections (training provided).
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow established procedures.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment with shifting priorities.
  • Clear communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.

Preferred
  • Experience in a testing lab, HVAC environment, or technical operations setting.
  • Familiarity with environmental chambers, sensors, or data acquisition systems.
  • Prior exposure to safety programs such as LOTO, hazard assessments, or equipment handling.
