What is the difference between Test Engineering vs Quality Assurance (QA) Testing?

AspectTest EngineeringQuality Assurance (QA) Testing
Primary FocusDesigning, developing, and executing test plans and automation scripts to validate productsVerifying that products meet quality standards through manual and automated testing
Work EnvironmentEngineering teams, development labs, automation toolsTesting labs, user environments, QA departments
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Computer Science; knowledge of testing tools and scriptingBachelor's in Computer Science, Quality Management; familiarity with testing methodologies
Industry UsageUsed across software, hardware, and embedded systems industriesPrimarily in software development and IT sectors

Test Engineering focuses on creating and implementing testing processes and automation to ensure product functionality, while QA Testing emphasizes verifying that products meet quality standards through various testing methods. Both roles are essential in the product development lifecycle but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, a background in engineering or computer science, and experience with software or hardware testing methodologies. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium, JUnit, or LabVIEW), scripting languages, and test management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure reliable product quality, efficient defect resolution, and clear collaboration across development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by test engineers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Test engineers often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, rapidly changing requirements, and the need to quickly learn new testing tools or technologies. Managing these challenges involves strong communication with development teams to clarify requirements, prioritizing testing tasks based on risk, and continuously updating one's skills. Collaborative work environments and agile methodologies can also help test engineers stay flexible and efficient, enabling them to deliver high-quality results even in fast-paced settings.

What does a testing engineer do?

A testing engineer designs, develops, and executes tests to ensure the quality and functionality of products or systems. They identify defects, document test results, and work with development teams to resolve issues, often using tools like test automation software and scripting languages. Strong attention to detail and knowledge of testing methodologies are essential for this role.

What is Test Engineering?

Test engineering is a field focused on designing, developing, and executing tests to ensure the quality and functionality of products, typically in software or manufacturing industries. Test engineers create testing plans, identify potential issues, and work closely with development teams to resolve defects before products reach customers. Their work is crucial in verifying that products meet specified requirements and industry standards. Test engineering can involve both manual and automated testing processes, depending on the nature of the product and the project requirements.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

In test engineering, high-paying roles such as senior test engineers, test engineering managers, or specialized consultants can earn around $2,000 per day, especially with extensive experience, advanced certifications, or in high-demand industries like aerospace or semiconductor manufacturing. These positions often require strong technical skills, project management abilities, and sometimes contract or consulting work that commands premium rates.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. High compensation typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-demand industries or leadership roles.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

Test engineering roles typically require a degree, but some high-paying technical or specialized positions in fields like software testing, automation, or quality assurance can reach $10,000 a month with extensive experience and skills. Certifications in testing tools or programming can enhance earning potential, especially in senior or lead roles. However, most jobs at this level often require relevant training, experience, or technical expertise rather than formal degrees alone.

Driven by creativity and a culture of excellence, we believe in the power of engineering to solve today's challenges and create opportunities for tomorrow. What we do matters.

We're hiring an Engineering Product Manager - Test Systems to lead the delivery of automated test equipment (ATE) and integrated test solutions for advanced aerospace and defense programs. In this role, you'll sit at the center of engineering, manufacturing, and program leadership-driving execution across electrical, software, and mechanical teams.

You'll own program scope, schedule, and cost, ensuring test systems are developed, integrated, and deployed successfully in production environments. This is a highly visible role ideal for someone who thrives in cross-functional leadership, fast-paced execution, and solving complex system-level challenges.

Location: Tucson, AZ (onsite)
Clearance: U.S. Citizenship required; Secret clearance (active or obtainable).  Strong preference for Active Clearance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and sub-IPMs in the technical execution of multiple test-system projects
  • Lead end-to-end delivery of test systems and automated test equipment (ATE) programs
  • Manage cross-functional engineering teams (electrical, software, mechanical, test)
  • Drive program execution, including scope, schedule, budget, and performance
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, finance, and leadership to ensure alignment and delivery
  • Oversee Earned Value Management (EVM/EVMS), reporting, and program financials
  • Support development of proposals, statements of work (SOW), and cost estimates (BOEs)
  • Identify risks, develop mitigation plans, and drive issue resolution across teams
  • Present program status, performance metrics, and key updates to leadership
  • Support test system deployment, production readiness, and ongoing sustainment

 Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related STEM field
  • 5+ years of experience in program management, engineering project management, or test systems leadership
  • Experience leading technical project execution across multiple teams or disciplines
  • Strong ability to manage cost, schedule, and performance in complex engineering programs
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills for interfacing with customers and program leadership
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM) or proposal development
  • Background in test systems, system integration, or hardware/software engineering environments
  • Ability to analyze program data, identify risks, and drive process improvements
  • Experience with Automated Test Equipment (ATE) and Unit Under Test (UUT) environments
  • Background in RF systems, radar, communications, or EO/IR technologies
  • Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, or DevOps tools (Azure DevOps, Jira, etc.)
