PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Let's be real, without solid streets, the city doesn't move. That's where you come in. As a Streets Operations Technician, you'll be the hands-on pro keeping Aurora's roads in top shape. From fixing potholes to clearing snow like a boss, you'll be out there making sure people can get where they need to go safely.
This isn't your average "sit at a desk" gig-it's boots on the ground, hands on the wheel, and gear in motion. If you like working outdoors, running heavy equipment, and being part of a crew that gets things done, keep reading.

The Hiring Range for this position is $23.62 - $29.52/hour.
The Streets Operations Technician performs semi-skilled tasks and operates automotive, ground and maintenance equipment to maintain, construct, and repair city streets projects for the Public Works department.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Shovels and tamps asphalt.
  • Loads and unloads tools.
  • Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of streets.
  • Operates and maintains specialized hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment such as a jackhammer, plate and jumping compactors, walk behind saws for asphalt and concrete cutting, single & tandem axle dump trucks, front-end loaders .
  • Performs snow removal being a lead for other department operators.
  • Operations with single and/or tandem axle plow trucks with sanders/tankers to include medium to heavy equipment for snow and ice removal and hauling.
  • Setting up and taking down of Temporary Work Zones for roadway maintenance activities .
  • Instructs and directs Streets Operations Workers. This includes leading operators from other departments for snow operations.
  • Ability to load/unload and haul equipment with 2 & 3 axle trailers.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience:
  • At least 18 months of experience of manual labor experience to include operating light and medium equipment related to street construction and maintenance. Equipment testing will occur following the interview to include CDL pre-trip/basic skills and Front-End Loader pre-trip and Operation.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the City of Aurora Street System/Snow and Ice Control Plan.
  • Knowledge of practices and techniques of street maintenance and construction.
  • Application of materials per operation to environmental standards .
  • Temporary Work Zone Safety & Jobsite Specific Safety to industry standards.
  • Safety practices common to equipment operation. This includes the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Commercial Driver's License pre/post trip inspections that apply.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and minor repair.

  • Basic Equipment Proficiency: Single and Tandem Axel Trucks to include implements required for snow operations of plow/sander/tanker, Front End Loader, Skid Steer.

  • Ability to perform strenuous, physical, outdoor labor for extended periods of time, outside and in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate various types of maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to respond to an emergency call within 30 minutes.
  • Supportive team player with a positive attitude and ability to adapt to change.
  • Strong commitment to safety.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Colorado Class A CDL
  • Ability to obtain Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must obtain ATSSA Temporary Traffic Control Technician and Colorado Flagger Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must obtain RTD On-Track Safety Training Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED training.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:
  • Heavy physical work requiring the ability to lift or move at least 80 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Frequetly liftst 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Considerable walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Regular pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Hand/eye and foot/eye coordination to operate motorized equipment.
  • Hearing and listening for receiving and interpreting information and warning signals
  • Clear vision to read operating manuals and instructions

Work Environment:
  • Works primarily outdoors in both hot and cold weather with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and chemicals.
  • Able to work in confined space.

Equipment Used:
  • Medium to heavy equipment common to roadway construction and maintenance operations.
  • Operates vehicles such as dump trucks, front loaders, and steel wheel and pneumatic rollers, forklifts, 2 & 3 axle trailers for hauling equipment, mechanical and vacuum sweepers
  • Operates hand tools and equipment common to roadway maintenance.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
  • Proper Federal Communications Commission (FCC) two-way radio communication standards.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
