Job Description:

Job Summary

The Athletics Communications and Media Relations Assistant supports the University of Kentucky Athletics Communications and Media Relations Office by promoting athletic programs, student-athletes, coaches, and special events through various communication channels. This position assists with media relations, content creation, website management, social media engagement, and game day operations. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and distribution of athletic communications materials while helping maintain positive relationships with media representatives and key stakeholders.

This position is a 12-month appointment with the opportunity for renewal for the 2027-2028 academic year at the discretion of the Athletics Communications and Media Relations Office.

Essential Functions

Write, edit, and distribute press releases for athletic contests, special events, teams, coaches, and student athletes.

Develop media materials, game notes, statistics packages, and media guides for assigned sports programs.

Assist with the maintenance and updating of the official athletics website.

Create and publish content that supports the department's digital and social media communication strategy.

Generate feature stories and promotional content highlighting the achievements and experiences of student athletes and coaches.

Coordinate media operations during home athletic events, including credential distribution, media accommodations, and interview requests.

Arrange and facilitate interviews between media representatives, coaches, and student athletes.

Attend assigned athletic events, practices, and media opportunities.

Assist with game day communications and event management activities.

Compile, maintain, and distribute statistical information and post-event reports.

Support the supervision and mentoring of student media-workers assigned to communication projects.

Collaborate with athletics staff, coaches, and external media partners to promote University of Kentucky Athletics.

Manage multiple projects anmd competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirement

Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Experience Requirement

1-2 years of experience in media relations, communications, journalism, public relations, athletics communications, or a sports information setting preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

All experience must be paid and in the same related field.

Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week.

Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.

Physical Demands

This position requires regular standing and walking during athletic events, video shoots, and production activities; regular sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods while editing video content; and regular repetitive hand and arm movements associated with editing software, camera operation, and production equipment. The position requires intermittent lifting, pushing, and pulling of video production equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, occasional setup and breakdown of production equipment, intermittent exposure to loud event environments, and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Employees must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet production deadlines, and maintain creativity and attention to detail in a fast-paced media environment.
