Summary
The Ultrasound Technologist is fully competent to perform all diagnostic procedures for the Diagnosis of specific diseases or conditions.Major Job Functions
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:
  • Competent in the technical operations of all equipment in this section
  • Assess patients, review orders/chart as appropriate confirming reason for exam
  • Ensure pertinent patient symptoms and clinical history are documented and a signed consent form is present if needed
  • Prepare patients for procedure, answer any questions and effectively communicate with the supervising radiologist for special instructions and/or questions regarding exam protocol
  • Responsible for prompt completion and accurate recording of exam begin and end time in the Radiology Information System (RIS) to ensure timely access to study by the radiologist
  • Provide safe environment to include infection control guidelines, universal precautions and patient safety goals
  • Monitor the timeliness of exams and quality of care based on established department goals, striving for continuous quality improvement
  • Perform QA of exams (correct order, accurate/complete image annotation, correct laterality) prior to sending to radiologist for interpretation
  • Participate in the clinical education of student sonographers
  • Participate in department's Performance Improvement Projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
Education and Formal Training:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Graduate of AMA approved Sonography program required
  • ARRT (Sonography) or ARDMS Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer(RDMS) preferred
  • New graduates who are registry eligible must be registered by either ARDMS or ARRT (Sonography) within 12 months of hire date required
  • Current AHA CPR certification required

Work Experience:
  • 1 year experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Technical skills and expertise in performing diagnostic and vascular sonography
  • Positive interpersonal skills
  • Verbal and written skills
  • Compassionate patient care
  • Knowledge of growth and development and understands range of treatment needed for all age groups
  • Ability to provide care based on the patient's developmental needs
  • Effective patient care and interacts effectively with patients of all ages

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to communicate orally
  • Dexterity and visual acuity
  • Mobility to assume awkward positions and respond to emergency situations
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to bend lift up to 100 pounds, carry objects up to 50 pounds
  • Position may involve skin, eye, or mucous membrane contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
