Job description

General Description This is a temporary employment opportunity not to exceed six (6) consecutive calendar months. The Casual Labor Camp Counselor assists with planning, leading, and implementing camp programs to campers. Provides high-quality educational and recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants.

Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being. The work schedule consists of Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM - Hours will vary. Essential Functions Enforces all policies and procedures set forth by the Division of Parks and Recreation to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience.

Supervises and participates with campers in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities while maintaining daily a safe and wholesome environment. Serves as a positive role model and leader while interacting with campers. Provides open and clear communication to campers, parents, and other staff.

Proactively discusses behavioral issues with supervisor and parents. Offers positive intervention with discipline related issues. Reports to supervisor, as necessary, and documents following prescribed disciplinary procedures.

Assists with implementation of summer camp curriculum. Assists with the set-up, tear down, and clean-up of program activities. Makes recommendations and suggestions to Supervisor.

Ensures the safety and security of facility and participants by conducting daily walk through of the facility and grounds. Administers first-aid for accidents or injuries, reports to supervisor and timely documents all accidents and injuries. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements Education, Training, and Experience High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of 18 years of age. Two (2) years' experience working with school-aged children.

Certificates and Licenses Valid Florida Driver License (or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida), or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle. Successful completion of Level II Background screening is required. This screening is through The Florida Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse: https://info.flclearinghouse.com/ Must obtain certification in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), or Automated External Defibrillator (AED) prior to official start date

Skills and Abilities Ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups, campers, parents, and the public. Must have strong organizational and time management skills. Knowledge of a variety of recreation activities suitable for children and youth.

Must have creative and artistic teaching abilities. Ability to demonstrate outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills with youth, staff, and parents in a positive and responsive manner. Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, effectively follow written and oral instructions, and have patience working with children and youth.

Must have working knowledge of computers. Physical Requirements/Work Environment Requires standing and walking most of the workday. The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.

The job requires frequent bending, squatting, balancing, throwing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and occasional kneeling and jumping. The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manual manipulation. The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.

The job may risk exposure to extreme noise. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Emergency Response/Recovery Activities All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency.

During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
