Structural Engineer 

Position Overview
5K Power is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to support the engineering, design, fabrication, transportation, lifting, installation, and field deployment of 5K Power’s growing portfolio of engineered power equipment and prefabricated electrical systems. 
 
This position will specialize in the structural design and analysis of fabricated steel and metal assemblies, including electrical skids, equipment platforms, enclosures, structural frames, panels, supports, lifting structures, and other custom-fabricated products. 
 
The Structural Engineer will work closely with the Director of Engineering & Design, electrical engineers, VDC/BIM, manufacturing, fabrication, QA/QC, rigging, and field operations to ensure every 5K Power product is structurally sound, manufacturable, transportable, liftable, and capable of safely supporting the equipment and loads for which it is designed. 
 
A major responsibility of this position will be developing engineered lifting and rigging solutions, including lifting points, pad eyes, spreader-bar connection points, forklift pockets, crane pick points, and other methods used to safely move and install 5K Power equipment. 
 
The ideal candidate understands the difference between designing something that is simply strong enough and designing something that can actually be fabricated, transported, rigged, lifted, installed, and repeatedly deployed in the field. 
 

Key Responsibilities

Structural Engineering & Skid Design

  • Perform structural analysis and connection design (welded, bolted, gussets) for steel and metal assemblies.

  • Design structural frames and skids for temporary power, transformer, switchgear, switchboard, generator, and battery/storage systems.

  • Analyze dead, live, dynamic transportation, lifting, impact, and environmental loads from heavy electrical equipment.

  • Determine structural member sizes, material thicknesses, reinforcement, deflection, and vibration limits.

Lifting, Rigging & Transport Engineering

  • Design engineered lifting points, crane pick points, pad eyes, lifting lugs, brackets, and forklift pockets.

  • Calculate center of gravity (CG), combined CG, load distribution, sling forces, and lifting point stress.

  • Develop clear, engineered lifting and rigging diagrams detailing safe working loads and pick locations.

  • Evaluate dynamic forces for truck/flatbed transportation, tie-down requirements, and temporary support conditions.

Fabrication Integration & VDC/BIM Coordination

  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to optimize structural steel sizes, minimize material waste, and reduce labor.

  • Work directly with shop fabricators to define welding requirements, review shop issues, and approve modifications.

  • Partner with the VDC/BIM team to produce fabrication-ready models, coordinate equipment mounting, and detect clashes.

Documentation, Standardization & Quality

  • Build a standardized Structural Engineering Library (standard frames, lugs, details, weld configurations, load tables) for repeatable manufacturing.

  • Develop comprehensive structural calculations, BOMs, welding details, and material specs.

  • Ensure strict adherence to AISC, AWS, ASCE, ASTM, OSHA, local building codes, and AHJ requirements.

  • Establish QC checkpoints, lead root-cause analysis on structural issues, and prevent unauthorized field modifications.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Structural design accuracy, schedule performance, and cycle time

  • Rework rates, fabrication-related issues, and field modifications

  • Zero lifting, rigging, or product failure incidents

  • Structural design standardization and material optimization

Qualifications
 

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; PE license preferred (required where scope/jurisdiction mandates).

  • Core Engineering Experience: 5+ years of experience in structural steel design, structural analysis, connection design, load paths, and fabricated steel assemblies.

  • Lifting & Calculations: Demonstrated ability to calculate lifting loads, structural reactions, and apply strong mathematical/analytical skills.

  • Fabrication & Field Knowledge: Strong understanding of welding, steel fabrication, and structural/fabrication drawing interpretation.

  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively across engineering, fabrication, rigging, and field teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry & Equipment: Background with electrical equipment skids, heavy electrical apparatus (transformers, switchgear, generators), electrical prefabrication, data centers, or industrial manufacturing.

  • Lifting & Handling Systems: Experience designing lifting lugs, pad eyes, crane/rigging systems, forklift handling, and dynamic transportation loading.

  • Codes, Software & Methods: Familiarity with AISC, AWS welding standards, FEA, BIM/VDC, standardized product development, and CAD/design software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, Inventor, Tekla).

  • Technical & Practical Vision: Can trace load paths, calculate lifting forces, identify pick points, and translate engineering into practical drawings for fabricators and riggers.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Comfortable moving between the shop floor, VDC model, and engineering office to collaborate directly with fabricators, riggers, modelers, and electrical engineers.
