About the Department
The Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) Department supports Western's mission, which states that together with our students, staff, and faculty, we are committed to making a positive impact in the state and the world with a shared focus on academic excellence and inclusive achievement. The SLHS Department consists of a diverse faculty and clinical/technical staff serving both undergraduate and graduate students. The department offers a B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders, an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology, an AuD in Audiology, and serves the community with its donations-based Speech-Language-Hearing Clinics. The SLHS undergraduate and graduate programs offer courses in a lock-step sequence beginning in the fall quarter of each academic year.
This pool is utilized as needed to support departmental needs.
Total work hours will not exceed 1,050 hours in any consecutive 12-month period from the original date of hire.
About the Position
The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences maintains a vacancy pool of qualified persons interested in temporary Speech-Language Pathologist clinical educator positions. In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year and summer sessions, applications are accepted continuously for temporary positions on a part-time basis with rare opportunities for temporary, full-time appointments. Positions may become available at any time and are typically filled on a quarterly basis. As a temporary Speech-Language Pathologist Specialist, you will be responsible for directing and evaluating graduate speech-language pathology students and providing professional speech-language pathology services to individuals.
Specific duties you will perform include:
- Directs and evaluates graduate speech-language pathology students;
- Educates and prepares speech-language pathology students in the development of relevant interpersonal and clinical professional/technical skills, and evaluate their performance;
- Reviews client file and meet with students pre- and post-assessment and treatment;
- Observes clinical sessions;
- Reviews evaluation and treatment plans;
- Provides guidance in clinical report writing;
- Edits documentation;
- Provides verbal and written feedback and remedial instruction as needed;
- Uploads student assessments on web-based systems (Calipso);
- Completes student evaluations and other clinical documentation for clinical training purposes, including supervised clinical clock hours, letters of recommendation, etc..
Provides professional speech-language pathology services to individuals.
- With graduate student clinicians, identifies and evaluates speech-language disorders;
- Demonstrates and evaluates use of diagnostic tools;
- Develops and evaluates treatment plans;
- Confers with family, counselors, school professionals, and other professionals in the evaluation, treatment, and progress of the client;
- Uses and demonstrates appropriate treatment methods for receptive and expressive language disabilities, behaviors, and development of alternative means of communication;
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in speech-language pathology approved by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; and
- Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; and
- State of Washington speech-language pathologist license or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
- Four years of experience as a speech-language pathologist
- A minimum of one year of experience supervising graduate students and previous work experience as a clinical educator at a university
