What is a temporary solar installer?

A Temporary Solar Installer is responsible for assisting in the installation of solar panels and related equipment on rooftops or ground-mounted systems for a limited period. Duties typically include assembling racking, securing panels, wiring electrical components, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. This role is often project-based, making it ideal for those looking for short-term work or experience in the renewable energy industry. Temporary installers work under the supervision of experienced technicians and may have opportunities to transition into permanent roles.

What does a temporary solar installer do?

A typical day for a Temporary Solar Installer involves preparing and assembling solar panel systems on residential or commercial rooftops or ground-mounted sites. You’ll work closely with a team to handle equipment, install mounting hardware, wire components, and ensure systems are securely and properly set up, often under varying weather conditions. Safety is a top priority, and following protocols such as using harnesses and protective gear is a standard part of the day. Temporary Solar Installers may also assist with site clean-up and perform basic troubleshooting or maintenance tasks. This hands-on role offers valuable experience, especially for those considering a long-term career in the renewable energy sector.

To thrive as a Temporary Solar Installer, you need practical skills in construction, working at heights, basic electrical knowledge, and a high school diploma or GED. Familiarity with hand and power tools, as well as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety certifications, are typically required in this role. Strong teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail help individuals excel when working on-site with installation crews. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality solar panel installations in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment.

Are temporary solar installer jobs in demand?

Temporary solar installer jobs are in demand due to the growing adoption of solar energy and expanding renewable energy projects. The industry values skills in electrical work, safety protocols, and the ability to work outdoors, with opportunities increasing as solar installations continue to rise nationally.

Where do temporary solar installers get paid the most?

Temporary solar installers tend to earn higher wages in regions with strong renewable energy markets and high demand for solar projects. States or areas with aggressive solar policies and larger installation volumes often offer better pay, especially for those with certifications or specialized skills. Compensation can also vary based on experience, union membership, and the complexity of installations.

This role focuses on commercial rooftop solar work, including the removal and reinstallation of existing solar systems on multi-story buildings. You will work as part of a field crew to safely handle solar panels, racking systems, and related equipment while following all fall protection and safety protocols. The position is ideal for experienced solar professionals who are comfortable working at heights and have hands-on experience with SolarEdge systems.

Responsibilities

  • Remove existing commercial rooftop solar systems, including solar panels and racking components, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Reinstall solar systems after removal, ensuring all panels, racking, and related equipment are securely and correctly mounted.
  • Work comfortably and safely on a two-story rooftop, consistently using appropriate fall protection equipment and procedures.

  • Inspect work areas and equipment for potential hazards and promptly report any safety concerns.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean, organized, and working condition.
  • Follow instructions from site leads or supervisors and adapt to changing project needs on the rooftop worksite.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with removing and reinstalling solar panels and racking systems on rooftop structures.
  • Experience in roofing or rooftop labor that supports safe and efficient work on commercial roofs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous work on commercial rooftop solar projects, including system removal and reinstallation.
  • Strong awareness of jobsite safety practices and willingness to follow all safety protocols.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a field crew and communicate clearly with team members.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and move solar panels, racking, and tools on a rooftop environment.
  • Attention to detail to ensure solar systems are reinstalled correctly and securely.

Why Work Here?

The work offers the opportunity to deepen your experience in commercial solar installations, including hands-on exposure to SolarEdge systems and complex rooftop projects. You can build your skills in a supportive environment that emphasizes clear communication, reliable processes, and continuous improvement in the field.
